National Coffee Cake Day –
Make some homemade coffee cake to share with your friends today. I
hear it even goes well with coffee. Go figure.
No Housework Day – This is my
kind of day. Today you do not have to do any housework whatsoever.
No vacuuming, dusting, washing dishes, washing clothes, anything!
Yeah!
World Health Organization Day –
On this day in 1948, the World Heath Organization was founded. Every
year, a different health related theme is focused on. This year the

International Beaver Day –
Today is a day to learn all about beavers. Maybe even take a field
trip to see a beaver dam.

International Snailpapers Day –
Created by Dan Bloom, this day celebrates newspapers. Actual
newspapers that are delivered to the bottom of your driveway every
day or weekend or however often you get them. If you get them, not
that many people do anymore.
Metric System Day – On this
day in 1795, the metric system was legalized in France which was the
first place that legally recognized the validity of this method of
measurement. A meter was defined as one ten millionth of the
distance from the North Pole to the Equator going through Paris.
National Beer Day – Yesterday
was New Beer's Eve, when people waited breathlessly for alcohol to be
legal again. On this day in 1933, they celebrated and ever since
then everyone has been very good about drinking moderately and
responsibly. Right? Not right?! Hmmm, kind of makes you think,
doesn't it? I gotta wonder what would happen if they ever decided to
legalize drugs.
Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance
Day) – This day begins at sundown today and ends at sundown
tomorrow. No one likes to think about the terrible things that
happened at that horrible period of our history, but we must think
about it. We must remind ourselves often about what happened so we
can hopefully ensure that it will never happen again.
To celebrate today, read your
newspaper, then take the kids out to see a beaver dam at the local
beaver pond, then take them for a blood pressure check up at the
local pharmacy with one of those fun machines. When you get home,
put your feet up, ignore the dirty carpet and dirty dishes, have some
coffee cake and beer, give the kids a meter stick and have them
measure everything in sight while you tell them about the Holocaust.
