Today we celebrate:

National Vanilla Custard Day – A dessert made with milk, eggs and sugar. Of those ingredients, the only one I can eat is the sugar so I guess I'll have to let my family celebrate this day without me.

International Geocaching Day – Geocaching is an activity where participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver to find containers called “geocaches” or “caches” hidden anywhere in the world. These caches can be any kind of container and usually contain a log book for the finder to sign and date and replace for the next geocacher to find. Sometimes they contain little trinkets or toys for the geocacher to take as a momento of the hunt.

International Homeless Animals Day – Celebrated on the third Saturday of August, this is a day to raise awareness about the problem of pet overpopulation. There are too many pets and not enough loving owners. Make sure you spay/neuter your pet so you don't add to the problem.

Meaning of "Is" Day – On this day in 1998, during grand jury hearings attempting to figure out President Bill Clinton's relationship with Monica Lewinsky, President Clinton used semantics and double talk to try to squeak his way out of trouble. His testimony was made public later that year and you can probably still find it on Youtube.

National Thrift Shop Day
– This is a day for bargain hunters and people who like to re-purpose other peoples used items. Thrift shops are a great place to find inexpensive but still perfectly good merchandise. You can also find retro items if that's your style. Go hunting for some treasures today.

To celebrate today, get your pet spayed or neutered, then go out on a geocaching hunt (bring the kids, they'll love it). Hit a thrift shop on the way home and employ your skills with semantics to talk the shop keeper into giving you an even better bargain than you would usually get there. Finally, finish up the day with some vanilla custard.
