International Young Eagles Day – Celebrated on the 2nd Saturday of June, this is a day to focus on providing introductory airplane flights to children ages 8-17 who are interested in flying. This day is sponsored by the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association), which is an organization of people who are passionate about aviation and committed to helping the spirit of aviation soar. http://www.youngeagles.org/
National Strawberry Shortcake Day – When strawberries are in season, this is one of my favorite desserts. Nothing beats the sweet, juicy, deliciousness of fresh strawberries. It's been so rainy here this year, however, I don't know what the strawberry crop is going to look like.
World Blood Donor Day – In many areas of the world, safe blood is very hard to come by. This is a day to make people aware of that problem and the need for as many regular blood donors as possible. The other purpose of this day is to thank donors for being willing to share their life saving blood with those who are in need. In the normal course of our lives we sometimes forget about how important it is that hospitals have enough blood to enable them to save lives every day. But it doesn't take much to remind us and we will line up at a blood bank for the opportunity to contribute to that effort. And when a real tragedy happens, people will come in droves and endure great hardship in order to donate because this is something that almost everyone can do to help at a time when everyone wants to help more than anything else.
Flag Day – On this day every year we celebrate the United States Flag. Let your flag fly with pride today and be proud to be an American. There will be many flag raising ceremonies all over the country today as well as numerous parades and musical salutes.
Pause For The Pledge Day – This day is celebrated simultaneously with Flag Day and is usually a part of Flag Day ceremonies. Pausing for the Pledge of Allegiance is a way for all citizens to share a patriotic feeling.
Army's Birthday – On this day in 1775, the United States Army was born. It was a bit of an undisciplined, rag tag bunch of farmers with no real chain of command but they got it together enough to defeat the British and their skills have only improved in the 239 years since that beginning. Today we honor the bravery, strength, and professionalism of our soldiers who still put their lives on the line to protect us every day.
World Juggling Day – Celebrated on the Saturday closest to June 17th, this is a day that is sponsored by the International Juggler's Association (IJA). The goal of today is to spread the fun that juggling provides and bring jugglers everywhere together. I know a juggler personally and he never ceases to amaze me with his skills whenever I see him perform. Events will be held all over the world. http://www.juggle.org/wjd/
Magna Carta Day – This is a document that the King of England was forced to sign on June 15, 1215. No, that is not a typo. It was an attempt to limit the King's powers by law so certain high level political people could protect themselves. The document basically said that the King was not all powerful and that the law took precedence over the King's wishes. There will probably be big celebrations next year because it will be the 800th anniversary, but there are many events going on in the United Kingdom this year as well. They are campaigning for Magna Carta Day to be a UK Public Holiday on June 15 every year but for now it is celebrated on a Saturday near June 15. http://magnacarta800th.com/events/
To celebrate today, start out your day reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Then sign your children up to be Young Eagles so they can learn to wag their wings to salute the Army as they are flying overhead. Then, while you have some time on your hands because you are sitting and donating blood, call up all of your English friends and wish them a Happy Magna Carta. When you get home, juggle the strawberries for the strawberry shortcake you are making for dessert tonight. Just don’t drop them, bruised strawberries are just no good at all.
