Today we celebrate:

National Airborne Day – This is a day created by George W. Bush in 2001 and approved by the United States Congress. The purpose of today is to honor our nation's airborne branch of the Armed Forces. Airborne fighting tactics have been very important to the success of innumerable battles during every war since it's creation right after World War I.

Joe Miller's Joke Day – This is a day to tell a joke in celebration of Joseph Miller, an English comic actor born sometime in the year 1684. He died on this day in 1738. During his life, he was a popular actor at the Drury Lane Theatre in London.  I know you have all been saving up your jokes all year long for just this occasion so let’s hear some good ones!  Here’s one to start you off: Q: Why did the insomniac man get arrested? A: He resisted a rest.

International Geocaching Day – Celebrated on the third Saturday in August, Geocaching is an activity where participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver to find containers called “geocaches” or “caches” hidden anywhere in the world. These caches can be any kind of container and usually contain a log book for the finder to sign and date and replace for the next geocacher to find. Sometimes they contain little trinkets or toys for the geocacher to take as a momento of the hunt.  This is a great activity to do with your kids if you are looking for a way to get them off the video games and out of the house.

International Homeless Animals Day – Celebrated on the third Saturday of August, this is a day to raise awareness about the problem of pet overpopulation. There are too many pets and not enough loving owners. Make sure you spay/neuter your pet so you don't add to the problem.

National Rum Day – All of my children love watching Pirates of the Caribbean. If you have seen any of those movies, you know that Captain Jack Sparrow loves rum but frequently finds that somehow it is mysteriously missing. If you enjoy drinking it too, and you are 21 years of age or older, this is a day for you, hopefully you won’t find yourself in the Captains predicament of wondering, “Why is the rum always gone?”

To celebrate everything in one day, take an airplane to the geocaching location of your choice while you drink rum and tell jokes to your fellow passengers.  Save a homeless animal while you are there and bring it home with you.
