October 20, 2014

Today we celebrate:

National Brandied Fruit Day – A bowl of fruit, some sugar and a little brandy. That's all it takes to get a delicious bowl of brandied fruit.

Birth of the Bab - One of eleven holy days of the Baha’i Faith, this is the day that the Bab was born in 1819.  The Bab was the Prophet-Herald who proclaimed the coming of Baha’u’llah the Founder of the Baha’i Faith.  This Holy Day was begun last night at sunset and ends at sunset today.  The Faithful will celebrate with prayers, music, fellowship and devotional readings.  I believe that the Universal House of Justice has decided to change when this event and the birth of the Baha’u’llah (the Twin Holy Birthdays) will be celebrated from now on.  They will be celebrated on the first and second day after the eighth new moon after Naw-Ruz beginning on March 20, 2015.  This means that the day of celebration will change from year to year.

Suspenders Day - Invented in the 1820s by Albert Thurston, who clearly had trouble keeping up his pants, this is a day to wear strips of cloth up over your shoulders and hooked to your pants.  My question is, do men have as much trouble keeping these suspenders on their shoulders as I do my bra straps?

Miss American Rose Day – This is a pageant that is focused on achievements and community service rather than beauty for girls and women of all ages. To celebrate this day, treat all the women in your life like beautiful American roses and perform some kind of community service.

National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day – Celebrated on the third Monday of October, this is a day to look at your computer desktop. How many icons do you have on there that you don't even use...ever! Can you even see your desktop picture? Can you quickly find what you need when you need it? Depending on your answers to these questions, you may need to take some time today to clean up your desktop so that you can work more effectively and efficiently.

World Osteoporosis Day - This day is not just a day.  This day is the beginning of a year of raising awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.  This is not just a disease that elderly women suffer from.  Anyone can be stricken and suffer frequent fractures.  Learn how to keep your bones strong to improve your quality of life when you are older.

To celebrate today, put on your suspenders and check your bone density while you watch the Miss Rose pageant and clean up your computer at the same time you are eating brandied fruit and researching the Bab.
