Today we celebrate:

Auntie Litter’s Annual Earth Day Parade and Celebration - According to Holidays, Festivals and Celebrations of the World Dictionary by Cherie D. Abbey, Birmingham, Alabama has, for the last twenty five years, celebrated this day as part of Earth Day.  Auntie Litter is a mascot, dressed in stars and green and white stripes, for a program that stresses conservation, litter reduction and recycling.  The parade is followed with science demonstrations, costumes, and a variety of entertainment.

National Jelly Bean Day – I, for one, love jelly beans. I always have them in the house around Easter time, they don't last long so I don't have anymore but since it's a special day, I think I'll see if I can find some somewhere.

Earth Day – This year the theme is “It’s Our Turn To Lead” and they will focus taking a stand together that the world’s leaders can follow.  We are looking forward to a climate change treaty, sustainable development and investing in renewable energy sources.

Girl Scout Leader Day – This is a day of appreciation for all the volunteers who work with the Girl Scouts as leaders or mentors.  The program would not exist without them and our girls would suffer from the loss.

Chemists Celebrate Earth Day – This is a day for chemists, chemistry teachers and chemistry students to show the world “the positive role that chemistry plays in preserving the Earth.”  They are working to save the environment for future generations. The theme this year is “Climate Science - More Than Just A Weather Report!”

In God We Trust” Day – On this day in 1956, President Eisenhower signed a law declaring “In God We Trust” to be our nation's motto.  This phrase has appeared on our paper money since that time.  It had been used on our coins in the past, but our paper money always said “E pluribus unum.”

Administrative Professionals Day or Secretary's Day – Celebrated on Wednesday of the last full week in April, this is a day to recognize the hard work of receptionists, secretaries, administrative assistants, and other administrative support personnel. Without their support, the management of almost any company would not be able to function. Other countries also have special days like this celebrated at different times of the year.  Australia, for example, celebrates on the first Friday in May.

International Mother Earth Day – This day is all about recognizing our responsibility to promote harmony and balance with nature and the Earth to meet the social, economic and environmental needs of our future generations.

To celebrate today, start out by making a plan to convert your house to use renewable energy.  Then gather everything that can be recycled in your house and take it to a recycling center. Next, find some Girl Scout leaders and Chemists and Secretaries and share the jelly beans you bought with your “In God We Trust” paper money.
