Today we celebrate:

Occupational Safety & Health Professionals Day – Celebrated on the Wednesday of North American Occupational Safety and Health Week (which would be this week) since 2006, this is a day to recognize the commitment of occupational safety, health, and environmental professionals to protect people, their property and the environment. These are the people who work hard to identify and remove workplace hazards in all organizations.
School Nurse Day – Celebrated on the Wednesday within National Nurses Week which is always from May 6th through May 12th.  School nurses take care of our children's bumps, bruises, cuts, scrapes and illnesses every day. They are vital to the health and wellness of our children in public and private schools. Today is a day to let them know how much we appreciate them.

National Nurses Day – This is the first day of National Nurses Week. It runs from May 6th to May 12th every year. May 12th is significant because it is the birthday of Florence Nightingale. Nursing is a difficult profession that is best suited to caring, compassionate, intelligent, and dedicated people. Make sure you show them appreciation today.

National Day To Prevent Teen Pregnancy – Celebrated on the first Wednesday of May for the last fourteen years, this has been a day for preventing teens from getting pregnant and becoming parents too early in their lives. I have a couple of teenagers myself, so I'm all for this day.  Teens don’t have a great ability to think ahead and realize the consequences of their actions so you have to explain the risks and consequences to them.

National Grump Out Day – Also celebrated on the first Wednesday of May, this day was created 14 years ago by Janice A. Hathy.  All of you grumpy people out there need to put on your happy faces today. This is a day to stop all the grumpiness, complaining, sourness, and striking out. Shake off the sour mood and smile today, you can go back to your normal grumpy self tomorrow.

National Tourist Appreciation Day – If you are a tourist, appreciate yourself for the positive impact your patronage will have on the places you choose to spend your money. If you do business with tourists, appreciate their desire to support your business, whatever it is. If you are annoyed by tourists visiting your city, remind yourself that they are vital to the local economy. You thrive because of them even if you don't directly do business with them.

International No Diet Day – Created in 1992 in the United Kingdom, this is a day to accept yourself however you look, however much you weigh. Do not try to change yourself by dieting today. You are beautiful just the way you are.  If you eat healthy food and live a healthy and active lifestyle, learn how to be happy with yourself no matter what shape your body happens to have.  We are not defined by our body shape, we are defined by who we are inside and how we choose to live our lives.

Beverage Day – This is a day to enjoy your favorite beverage, whatever it happens to be.

Crepe Suzette Day – There are differing accounts relating to how this dish originated. But the one sure thing is that it is delicious and involves pouring liqueur over a crepe and setting it on fire. A practice that I have never been able to bring myself to try because I'm afraid of setting other things on fire as well.

Lag B'omer – A Jewish holiday, this day represents a break in the season between Passover and Shavuot. This is the 33rd day of the 50 that are between those two events. It is a lifting of the mourning practices that occur during this time.  It begins at sundown and ends at sundown tomorrow.

Joseph Brackett Day – Born on this day in 1797, Joseph Brackett was a religious leader of the Shakers (The United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing) community in Maine. He wrote a song called “Simple Gifts” that became very popular in the Shaker community.

To celebrate today, smile all day and refuse to diet while you pretend to be a tourist in your own hometown and visit places tourists go where you can drink your favorite beverage.  Next, have some Crepe Suzettes with your child’s teacher and the school nurse while you talk about avoiding teen pregnancy and whether the school has any workplace hazards.  Finally, study the philosophy of Joseph Brackett before you have your end to mourning celebration at sundown.
