Today we celebrate a whole lot of things so make sure you have plenty of time:

Fall Astronomy Day - This is a day to look at the stars.  Check with your local planetarium  or Air and Space type of museum to see if they are having any special activities to celebrate today.  There will be things happening at all hours of the day and night because not all astronomy is based on the stars.  Back in April we had Spring Astronomy Day, this is the fall version of the same thing.  It occurs as closely as possible to the first quarter Moon in the Fall and is intended to facilitate interaction and education between astronomy professionals and enthusiasts and the general public.

National Seat Check Saturday - Car seats for children go a long way to keeping kids safe in the event of a car accident, but only if they are installed properly in the car.  It isn’t easy to do, trust me on this, I’ve had three kids and we’ve used many different kinds of car seats.  So you should go to a professional to check and make sure you have installed yours correctly.  This appears to be celebrated on the third Saturday in September.

Trail of Tears Commemoration Day - The Trail of Tears was the forcible relocation of the Cherokee Nation from their lands to the reservations that the government set aside for them in Oklahoma.  Thousands of Cherokee died during that time between 1836 and 1839 which is where the tears come in although being forced to move is devastating enough for that title.  There is a commemorative motorcycle ride that began yesterday with a kick off rally.  But today the ride starts at 8am CDT in Bridgeport, Alabama and ends at 3pm in Waterloo, Alabama where the after party with food and music which will encompass the rest of the day so feel free to join in.

International Talk Like A Pirate Day – Created by John Baur and Mark Summers in 1995, this is a day to talk like a pirate. Although it started out as a private joke between the two of them, they eventually sent a letter about it to humor columnist, Dave Barry, who liked the idea and spread it around. Dressing like a pirate is optional but encouraged.

National Butterscotch Pudding Day – I love to mix butterscotch pudding with vanilla ice cream. But plain old butterscotch pudding is pretty darn delicious as well.

Boys' and Girls' Club Day for Kids – Boys and Girls Clubs all over America are celebrating this Day for Kids in a variety of ways. Check with your local club today to see what they have planned. This day is celebrated on the third Saturday in September.

Big Whopper Liar Day – Also celebrated on the third Saturday in September, this is a day to lie and lie big. Little fibs will just not do today, you need to come up with some big whoppers.  Just be careful where and how and to whom you lie.  If you have an encounter with police or the court system today, I would advise abstaining from celebrating this day until you are home.

International Eat An Apple Day – On the third Saturday in September, we take this day to celebrate the beginning of fall by eating an apple, the most popular fruit of the season.

International Coastal Cleanup Day – This is a day that is also celebrated on the third Saturday in September. We honor the day by reducing the amount of trash we throw out and by cleaning up the trash lining our coasts. We need to keep our oceans clean.

Puppy Mill Awareness Day - Yet another day that is celebrated on the third Saturday in September, this is a day to be aware of the problems associated with puppy mills, also known as puppy farms.  These are commercial dog breeders who are more concerned with making money than with the well being of the dongs.  They keep them in cages in deplorable condition.  The mothers are sometimes kept pregnant almost constantly and the dogs are frequently sold with severe health problems.  This does not imply that all dog breeders do this.  I’m sure there are tons of good, reputable, dog loving people who take very good care of the dogs that they breed.  Make sure you find one of them if you are looking to purchase a dog.

Responsible Dog Ownership Day - This day was created by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and promotes responsible dog ownership.  It isn’t easy to take care of a creature that is dependent on you for so much but if you are going to own a dog, you must be responsible for it.  Believe me, the love you get back makes it totally worth it. This is another third Saturday in September celebration.

Software Freedom Day - This is a very busy day with another day that is celebrated on the third Saturday.  Today we also want to increase awareness of the many different kinds of software that are free.  You have to pay for almost everything in this world, but if you look, you can still find a few things that are free and this is one.  This was originally celebrated on August 28th when it was established in 2004, but in 2006 it was moved to the third Saturday in September.

To celebrate today, eat an apple while you check to make sure any car seats you have for your children are installed correctly.  Then, drop the kids at a Boy’s and Girl’s club and head to the coast to help clean up garbage with your dog.  Next, use some software to book your travel to Alabama to attend the Trail of Tears after party where you must be sure to dress and talk like a pirate while you eat butterscotch pudding.  Keep your eyes on the stars on the way home tonight while you think of a big whopper you can tell your spouse to explain why you didn’t pick up the kids like you were supposed to.
