Today we celebrate:

Another Look Unlimited Day  – Celebrated on the day after Labor Day, this is a day to examine your possessions and donate what you don't need to charity or reuse them in some other way. I just helped clean out the house of a hoarder.  I’m begging you.  Examine your possessions.  Get the stuff you don’t need out of your house in some way.  It’s best to donate to someone in need as long as it’s still good quality and not expired or eaten by mice.  If it’s no longer good, throw it away.  If you have to get a dumpster, GET A DUMPSTER!

National Date-Nut Bread Day – Dates and nuts mixed into a quick bread. Fast, easy and delicious.  Find some good recipes at the site referenced in the name of the day.

International Literacy Day – This is a day celebrated by schools and libraries for the purpose of highlighting and fighting against the problem of illiteracy.  Read a book today, help a youngster practice their reading skills or, if you have someone really young, start work on teaching them letters and their sounds, it's a great way to start them on the path to becoming a literate adult.

Pardon Day – On this day in 1974, President Gerald Ford, amid great controversy, pardoned former President Richard Nixon for any crimes he may have committed while in office. Ford said he just wanted to end all the uproar created by Watergate but there were many who disagreed with his decision and thought that Richard Nixon should have been the first former President to go to prison.

Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses DayThese are the nurses who help take care of people of all ages with blood and cancer diseases. They frequently go above and beyond the call of duty to provide whatever support these patients and their families need.

Virgin Mary Day – Celebrated exactly 9 months after the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, but is, oddly enough, nowhere near the day the birth of Christ is celebrated, which confuses me. Nevertheless, this is the day to have a feast that celebrates not the birth of Christ but the birth of Mary to her parents, Joachim and Anna, who also had an angel appear to them and tell them that they would finally have a baby after years of unsuccessful fertility treatments.

World Physical Therapy Day – This is a day to raise awareness of the remarkable benefits that physical therapists can bestow upon their patients. Physical therapy helps people heal faster from surgeries or injuries and get back up onto their feet and fulfilling a normal lifestyle far more quickly than they would without it.  If they would even be able to resume a normal lifestyle without it.  I have some experience with this as I utilized the skills of a physical therapist nearly 18 years ago and I am grateful for the help he was able to give me.

National Iguana Awareness Day - Are you aware of the creatures called iguanas that we share our planet with?  They can be a somewhat fearsome looking lizard, but apparently make great pets if you are a lover of somewhat less than cuddly creatures.  Now some people might think I am anti-lizard from this post.  That is far from the truth.  I love lizards.  I just prefer to admire from afar the ones that live in someone else’s house....in a cage.  There are some websites that claim that this day is celebrated on the 13th instead of today and I was not able to determine which is correct.

To celebrate today, eat some date nut bread while you examine your belongings to see what needs to go.  Then give a Virgin Mary statue to the hematology/oncology nurses in your local hospital before you go to a physical therapy office near you to read a book about Presidents Ford and Nixon to any children who might be receiving therapy there.  Then look at some lizard pictures, which is as far as I will go to celebrate that particular day.
