October 18, 2015

Today we celebrate:

World Toy Camera Day - Celebrated on the third Sunday in October, this is a day to honor the picture taking capability of toy cameras.  The take pretty terrible pictures, but kids don’t mind usually, they are just happy to be able to be in control of the camera and take the pictures they want to take.  This day was created by Becky Ramotowski who was inspired by World Pinhole Photography Day.  So find your kid’s camera and take a hundred pictures with it so you have a chance of getting one or two that are not too blurry.

World Menopause Day – This is a day that focuses on women in Menopause.  There is a theme for this day every year but I couldn’t find out what it was for 2015 in time to publish it. The International Menopause Society website still had 2014 information displayed.  But they usually focus on some sort of disease or issue that women in menopause face more often than pre-menopausal women.  Last year they focused on prevention of disease after menopause, and the year before that they focused on cancer because risks increased after women reach the age of menopause.

Alaska Day – This is a holiday in the state of Alaska that celebrates the fact that on this day in 1867, the Territory of Alaska was transferred from Russia to the United States for $7.2 million dollars. The actual purchase took place on March 30th of that year, but this day was the formal Russian flag-lowering and U.S. flag-raising ceremony with all the appropriate pomp and circumstance. The delay was probably because it took all of them that long to actually get to Alaska back then.  Since this is a state holiday, it is observed on a weekday when the actual day falls on a weekend like it does this year, so everyone in Alaska gets the day off tomorrow.

National No Beard Day – On this day, beards are not allowed for reasons that escape me. So anyone with a beard needs to shave it off today. You can have it back tomorrow.

International Cravat Day- This is a day to celebrate the cravat which has been keeping men’s shirt collars together for hundreds of years.  Invented by the Croatians hundreds of years ago, the French adopted it in the 17th century and never really let it go. It is very similar to a tie but is usually satin or silk and is considered to be less formal than a tie.

National Chocolate Cupcake Day – Cupcakes are the standard treat for school birthday parties and there is a reason for that. Kids love cupcakes. But not just kids, adults love these tasty mini cakes too. Make some chocolate ones today.

National Sunday School Teacher Appreciation Day – This is a day, celebrated on the third Sunday in October, to show your appreciation for the dedication of your child's Sunday School Teacher. Most, if not all, Sunday School Teachers are volunteers who prepare for class on their own time. Having been one myself for a few years, I know how time consuming it can get.  Make sure they know you appreciate their efforts on your child's behalf.

To celebrate today, shave off your beard and put on your cravat.  Don’t worry, you look dashing.  Then grab your kid’s toy camera and take pictures of your child’s Sunday School teacher while they eat chocolate cupcakes.  Finally, plan a cruise to Alaska with your menopausal mother.
