Today we celebrate:

National Call-in Day For Health Reform - On this day you are encouraged to call your Senators and your Representative in Congress to encourage them to reform our health care system.  I don’t know about you but I have a big issue with the fact that you don’t know what anything is going to cost you beyond your co-pay until they decide to get around to sending you a bill sometimes weeks or even months later.  What other industry in this country would survive if a customer had to do business with you and have no idea what you are going to charge them?  None!  But the health care system is flourishing.  At this website they are more concerned with coverage issues such as making sure uninsured people are covered. But I think that cost is a huge factor here and prevents patients from shopping around to different health care providers until they find one they can afford.

National Face Your Fears Day - On the third Tuesday in October we are encouraged to identify our fears, face them and overcome them so they no longer control us.  This day was created by Steve Hughes and some people claim that it is celebrated on October 13, or the second Tuesday in October.  Indeed, I even posted it last week on the second Tuesday. But I have since discovered the truth so I am correcting myself now.

Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity - This is a day of anti-abortion activism.  They say that there are more than 4,000 abortions every day and you are to protest this by standing in silent solidarity with those babies whose lives have been ended and are not able to speak for themselves.

Suspenders Day - Invented in the 1820s by Albert Thurston, who clearly had trouble keeping up his pants, this is a day to wear strips of cloth up over your shoulders and hooked to your pants.  My question is, do men have as much trouble keeping these suspenders on their shoulders as I do my bra straps?

The International Day of the Air Traffic Controller - There are more than 50,000 air traffic controllers in the world, and we depend on them every day to keep our airplanes from having collisions in the skies.  They get the planes from one airport to another and from the ground to the air and back again safely.  So this is a day to honor these dedicated and hardworking people.  They have a very stressful job and get very little recognition for the very important life altering work they do.

National Brandied Fruit Day – A bowl of fruit, some sugar and a little brandy. That's all it takes to get a delicious bowl of brandied fruit.

Miss American Rose Day – This is a pageant that is focused on achievements and community service rather than beauty for girls and women of all ages. To celebrate this day, treat all the women in your life like beautiful American roses and perform some kind of community service.

Birth of the Bab - One of eleven holy days of the Baha’i Faith, this is the day that the Bab was born in 1819.  The Bab was the Prophet-Herald who proclaimed the coming of Baha’u’llah the Founder of the Baha’i Faith.  This Holy Day was begun last night at sunset and ends at sunset today.  The Faithful will celebrate with prayers, music, fellowship and devotional readings.  I believe that the Universal House of Justice has decided to change when this event and the birth of the Baha’u’llah (the Twin Holy Birthdays) will be celebrated from now on.  They will be celebrated on the first and second day after the eighth new moon after Naw-Ruz beginning on March 20, 2015.  This means that the day of celebration will change from year to year. This day began last night and will end this evening.

World Osteoporosis Day - This is a day to love your bones.  We need to take care of the framework of our bodies.  If our bones are weak, our bodies are not going to last long.  So this is a day to think about what you are eating and whether or not you are eating food that will help keep your bones strong, or if you need to change the way you eat so you don’t end up with a broken pelvis the next time you trip on the curb.

To celebrate today, put on your suspenders and check your bone density while you watch the Miss Rose pageant and eat brandied fruit.  Then face your fears of public speaking and call your Senators and Representative about the Health Care system.  Then call up the local airport and thank the air traffic controllers for all their hard work keeping us safe.  Finally, spend the rest of the evening silently researching the Bab.
