Book Lovers Day - Celebrated on the first Saturday in November, this is a day to sit down and enjoy a good book. I don’t recommend walking, biking or driving while you participate in this day, it’s much more relaxing to get comfortable in a chair or couch or hammock if it’s warm enough, and dive right in. Some people celebrate this day on August 9th, and that’s fine too. As far as I’m concerned, every day should be Book Lovers Day. I work in a library so I feel honor bound to remind you that books you borrow from the library are free…..as long as you return them by the due date. Even if you’re a few days late, it is MUCH cheaper than buying books.
Digital Scrapbooking Day - Also celebrated on the first Saturday of November, this is a day to take your scrapbooking to a new level. My sister loves to do scrapbooking when she has time and it uses a lot of paper, creativity and time. Digital scrapbooking is almost the same minus the paper. You use computer graphics software but you can be just as creative, spend less money on materials, and have beautiful finished work that you can then make a ton of copies of to send to your beloved family and friends.
Hug a Bear Day - Do you have a favorite teddy bear? Well, today can be as simple as giving your favorite bear a big hug….or as complex as making a bear that you can hug. You can make a bear out of fabric and synthetic fur and stuffing, or clay, or paper, or any other material your creativity comes up with. The more delicate materials will then demand a more delicate hug so you don’t destroy your creation.
Learn To Homebrew Day - Today is a day to encourage people to learn how to brew their own beer. This can apparently be a rewarding hobby and even a way to make a little extra money, as long as your homebrew is tasty. Many homebrewers consider it to be an obsession. It takes some experimentation in order to get it just right, so don’t be discouraged if your first attempts do not taste very good.
Little League Girls Day - In 1973, New Jersey broke ground by allowing girls to play Little League baseball. In 1974, Little League was opened to girls and boys everywhere. And just last year in 2014, Mo’ne Davis became the first girl in Little League World Series history to pitch a shutout in the post season and to pitch a winning game and carry her team to victory. Girls have come a long way, but high schools and colleges and the minor and major leagues are still segregated.
National Wine Tasting Day - This is a day for every wine lover whether you are a professional, a connoisseur or just someone who drinks at home and knows what she likes when she tastes it. Most, if not all, wineries have wine tasting events where you can go and sample 3-5 different wines so you know if you like them before you buy them. Many liquor stores do the same on occasions. The one I frequent does so every Friday evening.
Wine Tourism Day - Celebrated on this day since 2013, so it’s relatively new, today is a day for anyone who is involved in the wine industry that caters to tourists to offer special events for the tourists to participate in. All of the organizations that participate are expected to donate a portion of their proceeds from the day to a local charity of their choice. It is a way to give back to the communities they live in. There will be a large variety of events being held all over the country from wine tastings to dinners to musical events and more. So check with your favorite winery to see if they will be participating today.
Notary Public Day - Notary publics have been celebrated on this day since 1975 in order to “recognize notaries for their public service and their contributions to national and international commerce.” Notaries are trusted public officials who are depended upon to affirm that the person signing the document is who they say they are. They confirm the person’s identity and are also responsible for assessing the person’s competence, comprehension and willingness to sign the document. And they don’t make money for what they do. Most of it is done for free. Some notaries can charge a small fee for their services and this serves to reimburse them for the cost of their licenses, and the cost of their stamps, all of which otherwise comes from their own pockets. And many notaries don’t charge for their services at all, the notaries at the library where I work are free. This day was chosen because using the Gregorian calendar, America’s first notary, Thomas Fugill was appointed on this day in 1639. (Oct. 25, 1639 using the Julian calendar.)
National Bittersweet Chocolate with Almonds Day – Almonds are very good for you, and we all know about the antioxidant effects of chocolate. So feel free to indulge yourself with both today.
