Elementary School Teacher Day - On the third Monday of January, we remember and honor the Elementary School teachers we had as well as the ones who are teaching still today. An Elementary School teacher has to be able to teach any subject to young, easily distracted students. This amazing person also has to teach sharing, manners, the importance of cleaning up, and playing well together. It’s a difficult job that I would not be able to do so I am very glad there are so many others who do it so well.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service - Created by Congress in 1994, and celebrated on the third Monday in January, this is a day give to others by participating in the thousands of service projects all across the country that have been planned for today. It is a day to spread the idea that we can all serve each other and spread messages of nonviolence and social justice.
National Gourmet Coffee Day - Coffee is a very popular beverage all over the world. Gourmet coffees are pretty easy to get these days but they are more expensive than the general run of the mill kind that I drink. You can get all kinds of different flavors so you can experiment to see what you like best.
Thesaurus Day – Peter Roget was born on this day in 1779. He created (authored, composed, devised, fathered, invented, made) Roget's Thesaurus, which I still use (employ, utilize) periodically (occasionally, sporadically) in my work.
Peking Duck Day – An interesting dish that I didn't really think was food at first. Much to my surprise, it has been a Chinese specialty for more than a thousand years.
National Winnie the Pooh Day – A.A. Milne, the creator of Winnie the Pooh, was born on this day in 1882. A sweeter, more loveable bear was never created, in my opinion.
National Sanctity of Human Life Day (or Pro-Life Day) – This is a day to spread the idea that life begins at conception and abortion should be prohibited. I know that is a controversial topic and has been for a long time so don't bombard me with messages chastising me for promoting this day or for not saying enough to promote it more. I didn't make it up, I'm just telling you about it. I am not telling you how I feel about it, yea or nay.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - This is the day that we celebrate the day that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr was born. We celebrate on the third Monday of January every year, but he was actually born on January 15. So every now and then this day falls on the actual day of his birth. Of course, we all know that Martin Luther King, Jr. was a great man, who wasn’t just involved in the Civil Rights Movement, he WAS the Civil Rights Movement and had a profound impact on all people, not just the African-Americans.
Civil Rights Day - It should be no surprise that this day falls on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Celebrate today by making sure you teach your children about tolerance and equality and make sure you practice it yourself. All Americans have the same rights but unfortunately, even today, many Americans are denied those rights.
Martin Luther King, Jr. - Idaho Human Rights Day - This is a day that was created by Idaho Governor Dirk Kempthorne and is celebrated with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in order to highlight further the fact that we need to work hard to make sure that no one is ever denied their basic Human Rights.
