Forgive Mom And Dad Day – This is a day for everyone to realize that children do not come with instruction manuals and we all make mistakes. As parents, all any of us can do is make the best decisions we can with the information we have available to us. For example, if your parents smoked in the house when you were a kid, before the effects of secondhand smoke were known to cause health problems with kids, forgive them because they probably would never have done it if they knew it would hurt you.
Awkward Moments Day – We've all had at least one awkward moment in our lives, I have had far too many to count. Celebrate them today and maybe laugh at yourself a little now that you've had some time to get over the embarrassment. It's time to acknowledge the humor in the situation.
World Sleep Day - Celebrated on the second full week in March, this is a day that was created by the World Sleep Day Committee of the World Association of Sleep Medicine. That sounds like an amazing committee to be a part of. I wonder what meetings are like, do they start them off with a nap? The idea is to draw attention to the variety of sleep problems that plague people and to spreading awareness of how to prevent, or at least manage them so that sufferers can live a good life. We all know that when we don’t get enough sleep, our health, safety and productivity suffer. But we do not all know that there are people who are devoted to making sure that we get a good night sleep. If you do not get enough sleep, seek them out and ask for help.
National Lacy Oatmeal Cookie Day – Oatmeal is healthy, isn't it? That's what I tell myself anyway as I'm munching on these delicious cookies.
Goddess Of Fertility Day – Celebrated before the Spring Equinox, this is a day for women who wish to conceive a baby to plead their case to Aphrodite, the ancient Greek goddess of love and fertility, by giving her offerings. I'm not too sure what she would find acceptable in the way of an offering, so don't ask me. If you are inclined to give this a try, make it a big offering because this hasn’t really been done regularly in hundreds of years, so she is sure to be hungry.
Biodiesel Day – Born on this day in 1858, Rudolf Diesel invented the diesel engine. He planned to use vegetable oil to fuel his engine and did a lot of work in the biofuel arena. In fact, when he demonstrated his diesel engine at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900, he ran it on peanut oil.
Supreme Sacrifice Day – This is a day that honors those who have made great sacrifices for others, maybe even for you. There have been many in our lifetime, many more if you go back further in time. Soldiers, firemen and women, policemen and women, neighbors and friends and even total strangers. Some you cannot find today because their sacrifice involved giving up their lives. But we can remember and honor all of them and live good lives to make sure that their sacrifices on our behalf were not in vain.
Snowman Burning Day – Begun by the Lake Superior State University Unicorn Hunters in 1971, this is a tradition that says goodbye to winter and hello to spring. This practice apparently comes from Germany where they would have a festival and the Mayor of the town would tell the children that if they promise to be good, he would order the straw snowman to be set on fire and spring would arrive. The children yell out their promise, the snowman is set aflame and it's bye-bye winter. In true college form, the LSSU's snowmen have taken many forms over the years. You can read about it here.
