April 16, 2016

Today we celebrate:

Foursquare Day - This day was created by Nate Bonilla-Warford, an optometrist in 2010. You see April is the 4th month of the year and so the date is 4/16 and of course, 4 is the square root of 16.  Hence, the date is four squared. Now, of course, there is an app called FourSquare that you can use to “check in” to an establishment and sometimes get discounts for doing so.  I am not sure if that Foursquare is the same as this Foursquare.

Save the Elephant Day - Created by the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation, this day was begun in 2012 with a documentary called ‘Return to the Forest’ by Patricia Sims and narrated by William Shatner. Their goal is to spread awareness of the crisis that elephants are experiencing due to poaching and loss of habitat.  Their numbers are dwindling.

National Librarian Day - This is a day to honor and appreciate librarians all over the country. Librarians do far more than simply help us find a book we might like to read, although they are happy to do that. If you have a research project, a librarian can help you find the information you need. They can help you find resources in your community to help you with any problem. The libraries have many different kinds of public programs. Of course, the larger libraries will have more than the small town libraries, but if your library doesn’t have the program you want, they can help you find it elsewhere. Go ahead, ask them a question, I seriously doubt you will be able to stump them.

National D.A.R.E. Day – Every year, the President of the United States designates a day around this time of year to be a National D.A.R.E. Day. D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education and it involves police officers educating kids in school about the hazards of drugs.

World Circus Day - Celebrated on the third Saturday of April all around the world for the last seven years, this is a day for Circus Arts and Culture. There is a theme for the day, which this year is: “Collaboration & Cooperation for the Future of Circus”. If you can find a circus near you, they are probably going to have some special events to celebrate with.

National Eggs Benedict Day – To make this delectable dish you need warm, crispy bacon, a toasted and buttered English muffin, poached eggs and a warm and creamy Hollandaise sauce. Put them all together and you have a delicious breakfast. I couldn't determine which Benedict these eggs were named after, every Benedict in history seems to have some sort of story attached to them whereby they claim credit.

National Baked Ham With Pineapple Day – This must be a week for ham so I hope you’re not sick of it yet. Although this ham is different from yesterday’s because today you can add pineapple.

National Healthcare Decisions Day – This is a day to educate and inspire you to make your health care decisions BEFORE you are in dire need because of an emergency. Plan ahead because no one leaves their house in the morning thinking that this is the day I'm going to have an accident and end up in the hospital before nightfall. Plan ahead people!

World Voice Day – As a species, humans depend on their voices to communicate with each other. It is a tool for conveying emotion, as well as information. We depend on our voices when we educate each other. We also depend on our voices for entertainment, as well as for getting the attention of others when needed. This is a day to get excited about voice science, and the vocal arts.

Day of the Mushroom - Now mushrooms are apparently healthy.  My husband and my son love them. I can’t get past the fact that they are a fungus. My husband assures me that they can be eaten cooked or raw but I’m not willing to risk it. Fungus is something we are supposed to get rid of, not ingest.

National Stress Awareness Day - This is a day to spread awareness of the fact that stress affects us in ways we don’t think about on a regular basis. It can have a ripple effect throughout our bodies and show up in many ways such as heart disease, loss of hair, lines on the face and innumerable others. So try to be aware of how much stress you are under today and look for ways to ease your stress so you can be healthier.

Teach Your Daughter To Volunteer Day - Celebrated on the third Saturday in April, this is a day to encourage the younger generation of women to go forth with enthusiasm and compassion and help people. It benefits them as well as the communities they live in and teaches them tolerance and the fact that if we are willing to work together, there is no problem we cannot solve.

Husband Appreciation Day – Celebrated on the third Saturday of April, this is a day to appreciate your husband if you have one. Do something nice for him today, be extra sweet and maybe make his favorite dinner.

Record Store Day – Also celebrated on the third Saturday of April, this day was created in 2007 by Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don Van Cleave, and Brian Poehner to celebrate the art of music by turning it into a party for everyone to participate in.. This day is recognized world wide with musical artists of all kinds participating in special appearances, performances, meeting fans, and special releases of CDs.

Auctioneers Day – A day to reflect on one of the oldest professions in history and to celebrate its’ future. Today we have online and in person auctions to participate in, maybe in a hundred or so years we will be able to participate holographically. This is another day that is celebrated on the third Saturday in April every year.
