Today we celebrate:

Cousteau Day - Jacques Cousteau was born on this day in 1910. He lived for 87 years and taught us so much about our oceans, marine life and conservation. His signature look involved wearing a red watch cap so if you can find one of those, wearing it would be a great way to celebrate this day. You could also watch some of his documentaries today with your kids so they will also know who he is.

International Young Eagles Day – Celebrated on the 2nd Saturday of June, this is a day to focus on providing introductory airplane flights to children ages 8-17 who are interested in flying. This day is sponsored by the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association), which is an organization of people who are passionate about aviation and committed to helping the spirit of aviation soar.

Corn on the Cob Day – Corn is a crop that has been grown for food for thousands of years. I like corn but have always been somewhat skeptical of its’ nutritional value. However, I understand that it does contain B Vitamins, Vitamin C, Phosphorus, Manganese, Folate, and Soluble Fiber. So enjoy some today.

National Making Life Beautiful Day - On this day in 2009, Apriori Beauty began their mission of helping men and women of all ages feel beautiful inside and out. They encourage everyone to do whatever they can to create beauty by helping others be successful, and building meaningful and insightful relationships. If you put in the time and effort, you can make not only your own life, but also the lives of those around you, be as beautiful as you want them to be.

National Rosé Day - Another second Saturday in June day, this one celebrates what may be the oldest known type of wine. They are usually made with red grapes and are pink in color. They go well with almost any kind of meal, even waffles. Hmmm...that sort of implied that I drink wine with my breakfast, but I’m sure you also eat breakfast for dinner as frequently as I do, right? I thought so.

World Gin Day - Speaking of breakfast drinks...um, scratch that. If you are looking for a good dinner cocktail, I hear that gin pairs well with tonic and other things to make a very nice evening beverage for those of us old enough to legally imbibe such things. And this is something that you can share with your international friends. Maybe time it so you all have a drink at the same time. Why not, it’s five o’clock somewhere, right?

Belmont Stakes – This is a famous Thoroughbred horse race that is held every year at Belmont Park in Elmont, NY. It is a 1.5 mile race for 3 year old thoroughbreds. The the winner gets $1.5 million dollars which is pretty powerful incentive for the owners. I'm not too sure if the horses care. Maybe they are racing for an extra apple.

National German Chocolate Cake Day – Interestingly enough, this delectable dessert did not originate in Germany as the name may imply. The chocolate used in the recipe was invented in 1852, by an American by the name of Sam German for the American Baker's Chocolate Company. They named the chocolate “Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate” in his honor. Then the cake recipe that came a hundred years later was created by Mrs. George Clay, a Texas homemaker, who used this chocolate and named her cake German's Chocolate Cake. The possessive “ ‘s ” was dropped over time to become German Chocolate Cake

King Kamehameha Day - This is not only a fun name to say, but it is a real public holiday in Hawaii. It honors Kamehameha the Great. He was the king who, in 1810, unified the various islands that now comprise the Hawaiian Islands. He ruled between 1782 and 1819. In Hawaii there are numerous festivals, carnivals, races and parades in the days surrounding this day, all in honor of this beloved King.
