Aunt’s Day - Celebrated on the first Saturday after Labor Day, this is a day to celebrate the Aunts in our lives. I have a few, some people have a lot more than a few, and others have just one or two. But the number doesn’t matter as much as the love does. Contact your beloved Aunt(s) today and tell them you love them and think about them often.
Blame It on the Large Hadron Collider Day - On this day in 2008, the first Large Hadron Collider was finished and ready to test the Big Bang Theory (the real theory, not the television show) in a controlled environment. Since then, people (mostly science geeks) have found it convenient to blame the Large Hadron Collider for anything missing in their lives. Missing your cell phone? It’s probably in the Large Hadron Collider. Missing your socks after doing laundry? It’s probably in the Large Hadron Collider. You get the idea.
Sewing Machine Day – Also celebrated on June 13th, this is a day to use your sewing machine to make some new clothes for yourself and your family. Elias Howe received a patent for his sewing machine on this day in 1846.
National Hot Dog Day - This is not the day created by the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council, this is one of simply one of the almost daily food holidays created by person or persons unknown, well at least unknown to me. I’m sure someone knows. You can find food holidays on https://foodimentary.com/, among other locations, while you are grilling up those dogs for dinner.
National Lacemaking Day - On the second Saturday in September, lacemakers around the country have public events where they show people how to make lace by hand and encourage more people to take up the craft.
World First Aid Day - First aid training is essential in the goal of saving lives and preventing injuries from becoming more serious than they already are. First aid is not just about applying bandages, although that is important to stop or slow bleeding and prevent infection. It’s about cleaning wounds, immobilizing parts of the body so further damage does not occur, easing symptoms of shock, making sure blood and oxygen circulate through the body, and much, much more. Carl Garner Federal Lands Cleanup Day - Celebrated on the first Saturday after Labor Day, this is a day to marshall up the citizens of America and get to work cleaning up Federal lands. It was created in 1985, and called Federal Lands Cleanup Day. But in 1995, it was renamed to honor Carl Garner who apparently put in a lot of time and effort getting people to help him clean up the environment in Greers Ferry Lake and the Little Red River.
International Creepy Boston Dynamics Robotic Horse Day - As you may or may not know, people who know how to do such things are very busy trying to create realistic looking working robots. I think that they have the idea that if they make a robot look like something that people are already used to, people will accept it more easily. That or they figure that why try to reinvent the wheel. If a body structure works in real life, maybe it will work in artificial life. However, if you break a body down to see it’s bare bones, it’s pretty creepy looking. So robots, without a covering to hide their inner workings, are also pretty creepy. Boston Dynamics is an organization that builds robots and they have a good one that resembles a horse. Albeit, a creepy one.
Swap Ideas Day – This is a day for an open idea exchange. Swap your ideas with everyone you meet today, the only rule is that you must be open minded and not get into a fight just because someone might disagree with you or share an idea that you find repugnant. Politics and religion are particularly inflammatory subjects. So please remember that the idea today is simply to exchange ideas, not to convince someone to change their thinking on a subject. You can agree to disagree.
World Suicide Prevention Day – This is a day to do whatever you can to prevent suicides from happening. There are warning signs, find out what they are and spread the information around. If more people are able to recognize when someone might be headed down a suicidal path, there is a greater chance of diverting them to a more positive place and possibly saving a life.
Farmers' Consumer Awareness Day – Celebrated on the second Saturday in September, this day was begun in 1981 when a man named Dennis Higashiyama heard a Paul Harvey radio story that talked about how regular people have no idea how their food gets to the grocery store. He began this day so the farmers can show people what they do and how they do it so we can all have a greater understanding of how much is involved in growing food and getting it to the table of the average person.
International Drive Your Studebaker Day – Celebrated on the second Saturday in September, this is a day to drive your Studebaker everywhere. You can go anywhere you want, just make sure you stop often so people can admire your car and so you can tell them all the reasons why you love your Studebaker so much.
National Hollerin' Contest Day – Celebrations have moved from the 3rd Saturday in June to the second Saturday in September, but this is still a day to exercise those vocal cords of yours. In Spivey's Corner, North Carolina, there has been a Hollerin' Contest every year since 1969 for the purpose of commemorating and possibly reviving (though I'm not sure that's practical in this high tech telephone age) the fine art of hollerin', a long lost, long distance means of communication between people (probably mostly mothers to their children).
TV Dinner Day - In 1953, Swanson & Sons did something no one else had ever done and put a full, single serving meal on a tray, in a box and froze it. It became known as a TV dinner. There are lots of different kinds of meals that can be found like this in the grocery store now, and some of them look like they might be somewhat healthy. They can also be cooked in a microwave instead of in the oven these days which makes it even faster.
International Make-Up Day - This is a day for making up with anyone that you have hurt either purposefully or accidentally. Apologize for anything you did or said that was wrong or hurtful and you will both feel better for it.
