Today we celebrate:

National Chocolate Cupcake Day – Cupcakes are the standard treat for school birthday parties and there is a reason for that. Kids love cupcakes. But not just kids, adults love these tasty mini cakes too. Make some chocolate ones today.

World Menopause Day – This is a day that focuses on women in Menopause. There is a theme for this day every year but I couldn’t find out what it was for 2015 in time to publish it. The International Menopause Society website still had 2014 information displayed. But they usually focus on some sort of disease or issue that women in menopause face more often than pre-menopausal women. Last year they focused on prevention of disease after menopause, and the year before that they focused on cancer because risks increased after women reach the age of menopause.

Alaska Day – This is a holiday in the state of Alaska that celebrates the fact that on this day in 1867, the Territory of Alaska was transferred from Russia to the United States for $7.2 million dollars. The actual purchase took place on March 30th of that year, but this day was the formal Russian flag-lowering and U.S. flag-raising ceremony with all the appropriate pomp and circumstance. The delay was probably because it took all of them that long to actually get to Alaska back then. Since this is a state holiday, it is observed on a weekday when the actual day falls on a weekend like it does this year, so everyone in Alaska gets the day off tomorrow.

National No Beard Day – On this day, beards are not allowed for reasons that escape me. So anyone with a beard needs to shave it off today. You can have it back tomorrow.

International Cravat Day - This is a day to celebrate the cravat which has been keeping men’s shirt collars together for hundreds of years. Invented by the Croatians hundreds of years ago, the French adopted it in the 17th century and never really let it go.

National Face Your Fears Day - On the third Tuesday in October we are encouraged to identify our fears, face them and overcome them so they no longer control us. This day was created by Steve Hughes and some people claim that it is celebrated on October 13, or the second Tuesday in October.

Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity - This is a day of anti-abortion activism and appears to be celebrated on the third Tuesday in October. They say that there are more than 4,000 abortions every day and you are to protest this by standing in silent solidarity with those babies whose lives have been ended and are not able to speak for themselves.

National Pharmacy Technician Day - Pharmacy Technicians are an invaluable resource for pharmacists. They can do a lot to support pharmacists in many ways making a pharmacists job much more manageable. We celebrate these important people on the third Tuesday in October.
