Today we celebrate:

National Call-in Day For Health Reform - On this day you are encouraged to call your Senators and your Representative in Congress to encourage them to reform our health care system. I don’t know about you but I have a big issue with the fact that you don’t know what anything is going to cost you beyond your co-pay until they decide to get around to sending you a bill sometimes weeks or even months later. What other industry in this country would survive if a customer had to do business with you and have no idea what you are going to charge them? None! But the health care system is flourishing. At this website they are more concerned with coverage issues such as making sure uninsured people are covered. But I think that cost is a huge factor here and prevents patients from shopping around to different health care providers until they find one they can afford.

The International Day of the Air Traffic Controller - There are more than 50,000 air traffic controllers in the world, and we depend on them every day to keep our airplanes from having collisions in the skies. They get the planes from one airport to another and from the ground to the air and back again safely. So this is a day to honor these dedicated and hardworking people. They have a very stressful job and get very little recognition for the very important life altering work they do.

National Brandied Fruit Day – A bowl of fruit, some sugar and a little brandy. That's all it takes to get a delicious bowl of brandied fruit.

Miss American Rose Day – This is a pageant that is focused on achievements and community service rather than beauty for girls and women of all ages. To celebrate this day, treat all the women in your life like beautiful American roses and perform some kind of community service.

Suspenders Day - Invented in the 1820s by Albert Thurston, who clearly had trouble keeping up his pants, this is a day to wear strips of cloth up over your shoulders and hooked to your pants. My question is, do men have as much trouble keeping these suspenders on their shoulders as I do my bra straps?

Birth of the Bab - One of eleven holy days of the Baha’i Faith, this is the day that the Bab was born in 1819.  The Bab was the Prophet-Herald who proclaimed the coming of Baha’u’llah the Founder of the Baha’i Faith. This Holy Day was begun last night at sunset and ends at sunset today. The Faithful will celebrate with prayers, music, fellowship and devotional readings. I believe that the Universal House of Justice has decided to change when this event and the birth of the Baha’u’llah (the Twin Holy Birthdays) will be celebrated from now on. They will be celebrated on the first and second day after the eighth new moon after Naw-Ruz beginning on March 20, 2015. This means that the day of celebration will change from year to year. This day began last night and will end this evening.

World Osteoporosis Day - This is a day to love your bones. We need to take care of the framework of our bodies. If our bones are weak, our bodies are not going to last long. So this is a day to think about what you are eating and whether or not you are eating food that will help keep your bones strong, or if you need to change the way you eat so you don’t end up with a broken pelvis the next time you trip on the curb.

Conflict Resolution Day - Celebrated on the third Thursday of October, this is a day that was created in 2005 by ACR (Association for Conflict Resolution) in order to; promote creative and peaceful methods of resolving conflicts such as mediation, and arbitration; promote the use of conflict resolution techniques in families and just about every organization you can find; recognize the efforts of people who work to resolve conflicts peacefully; spread their message and techniques around the world. This year they are holding a poetry contest. Students are encouraged to submit to them a poem on “Building Peace.”

Get to Know Your Customers Day – This is the fourth Get to Know Your Customers Day for the year. It is celebrated on the third Thursday of each quarter.  Use the opportunity to find out what your customers need so that you can be better prepared to provide it.

Get Smart About Credit Day – This is a day for bankers to reach out to their communities by going to the high schools and colleges and teaching the kids about budgeting, using credit cards wisely and building a good credit history. This is always celebrated on a weekday in October but is not on a regular schedule like most days so we have to wait until it is announced every year. Bankers are encouraged to host events to celebrate this day anytime in the fall so you may see some things going on at your local bank on other days.

International Credit Union Day - Celebrated on the third Thursday in October ever since 1948, this is a day to recognize the achievements of credit unions around the world and give members a chance to get more involved. There will be all sorts of different activities sponsored by credit unions such as fundraisers, contests, picnics, maybe even a few parades.

Spirit Day - Also celebrated on the third Thursday in October, this day is a day to support LGBT youth and take a stand against bullying. And let me be clear. Supporting them does not mean that you agree with their lifestyle, as I know that many out there do not.  It does mean that you believe that whatever their lifestyle is, they should be able to live free from being bullied. We all have choices to make in this life that we have been given. We can choose to be a person who builds people up and is supportive of those around you, or we can choose to be a person who pushes people down and makes those around you miserable. I choose to be the former.

Information Overload Day – Celebrated by some on different days, this is a day to back away from the information that bombards us all day long from a plethora of sources. We can't seem to escape it no matter where we are and sometimes it gets to be too much. Shut off your computers, televisions, radios and cell phones. Do not leave your house for a while and just bask in the silence.
