Today we celebrate:

National Physician’s Assistant Day - Sponsored and possibly created by the American Academy of Physician’s Assistants, this is a day to recognize the invaluable assistance that Physician’s Assistants provide to physicians and general practitioners. They can provide many of the same services to patients and save the doctors valuable time by allowing more patients to be treated in a short period of time.

Garlic Lovers Day - This day is pretty self explanatory and not suitable for any vampires that might be living in our midst. Load up on the garlic in your meals today, just maybe think about refraining from kissing your loved ones who did not choose to partake.

Come and Take It Day - Now let’s be clear here. Yes, this day is pretty much what the name says it is. Whatever it is that you want, come and take it today. HOWEVER, and this is a BIG however, we are not condoning stealing in any way shape or form. So make sure that whatever it is you are taking, you have permission to do so. This day commemorates the firing of the first shot of the Texas revolution on this day in 1835 near Gonzales, Texas, which has a festival which they call “Come & Take It Festival” every year.

National Noodle Day – This is a day to eat noodles in any form. My daughters will love this day. I swear they would eat nothing but noodles all day every day if I let them.

Jackie Mayer Rehab DayThis is a day to honor Jacquelyn Jeanne Mayer, Miss America 1963. Ms. Mayer had a stroke in 1970, at the age of 28 years old, and worked hard for seven years to regain her speech and mobility. On this day in 1997, a rehab and nursing facility of Providence Hospital was renamed the Jackie Mayer Rehab Center.

Mad Hatter DayThis is a day to collect hats, or monetary donations that will go to purchase hats for children with cancer. Chemo robs you of much more than hair, but hair is a big visual banner, the lack of which announces to the world that you have cancer (although it could also be alopecia). Hats help children, and anyone with cancer, to not only keep their heads warm, protect them from the sun and to help take some of the self-consciousness away.

National German-American Day – This is a day to celebrate your German American heritage. This day was chosen because it was on this day in 1683 that thirteen German families landed in Philadelphia. They founded Germantown, Pennsylvania which became the first German settlement in America. This day was created in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan in order to honor the 300th anniversary of German American culture in the United States.

National Depression Screening Day – This is a day to raise awareness of the signs of depression and anxiety disorders and to participate in a screening program so that you can get help if you need it. This day is celebrated on the Thursday during Mental Illness Awareness Week which is the first full week of October.

National Poetry Day - A celebration of poetry and all things poetical that has been a special day for the last 21 years. Share your poetry with the world with the hashtag #nationalpoetryday. This day is coordinated by the Forward Arts Foundation. The BBC Radio 4 will have some well-known poets and performers share poetry on air at different points in their regular schedule. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason regarding when the day is celebrated. Next year, according to the website, the celebration will be on September 28th. It’s unusual for anything but religious holidays to jump months like that.
