Today we celebrate:

International Sweater Vestival - Celebrated on the second Friday after Thanksgiving, this is a day to wear a sweater vest to work. This is a holiday that kind of makes fun of some of the other odd holidays we celebrate. Knoxville, Tennessee celebrates a day like this in May, but it’s a little too warm for sweater vests then, in my opinion.

Popping Corn Day - For all of the popcorn lovers out there, today is a day to eat all the popcorn you want. It’s one of my children’s favorite snacks so you know they’ll jump on this one as soon as they get home from school. I don’t even have to tell them about it.

National Fritters Day – My husband will be very happy for this day. I make some pretty good corn fritters. They are the only kind I know how to make but I'm sure there are lots of other kinds of fritters that you can make. Maybe this website will help you, who knows, maybe it will help me, too!

International Day for the Abolition of Slavery – On this day in 1949, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others. Slavery still exists all around the world but instead of enslaving whole races of people, individuals are enslaved and forced to do things the rest of us do not even want to think about, but we have to if we want to fight this despicable practice.

National Mutt DayThis is a day to celebrate the Mutt. As you probably know, a mutt is a dog that is not a purebred dog so it has the genes of more than one breed of canine. Some people look down on these dogs, but I can tell you that they are wonderful. Mutts are generally healthier than purebreds because of their mix of genetics, the stronger ones will win out. They also carry many wonderful characteristics of different breeds so if you are looking for a dog with certain traits and you can't find just one breed that has all of them, look at a mutt. This day is also celebrated on July 31st because mutts can’t get too much love.

Special Education Day – This is the tenth celebration of this special day. It was created in 2005 to acknowledge the 30th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. We've come a long way in educating everyone. Children with disabilities are receiving quality education in schools and people without disabilities have learned a lot about how to treat those with disabilities. More and more businesses and public places have made allowing access to those with disabilities to be a priority. Of course, they had the added incentive of having a law telling them they have to do so, but why point out the minor legalities of it all. But, we are not done, there is still more work to do so we can’t rest yet.

Faux Fur Friday – Faux fur is man made material that resembles animal fur in texture and appearance. It is cheaper than real animal fur and far less devastating to the animals in question. It was first invented in 1929 but has been increasing in popularity because it is very animal friendly. This day is celebrated on the first Friday in December.

Salesperson Day – Also celebrated on the first Friday in December, this is a day to recognize how much we depend on salespeople. They help us decide what we need, answer our endless questions, help us solve problems and offer advice. We depend on them to have all the answers we might ever need so they must keep up to date on the latest technology or fashion which are both constantly changing. This is different from National Salesperson Day which is the first Friday in March. Don’t bother asking me how it is different because the only thing I notice is that in March it’s a National day and today it’s just a day.
