Today we celebrate:

Monte Cristo Day - Today we take the time to enjoy a sandwich. Yes, I am serious. This is a particular sandwich, however. It is a fried ham and cheese sandwich. It is sometimes called a French Sandwich or a Toasted Ham Sandwich or even a French Toasted Cheese Sandwich. And there are variations that could include turkey or different kinds of cheese, or sprinkled with powdered sugar. It could be open faced or grilled or broiled. So anyway you happen to like it, feel free to eat it that way today.

Citizenship Day or Constitution Day – This day is to celebrate the adoption of our United States Constitution and to recognize everyone who has become United States citizens either by birth or by naturalization. It was on this day in 1787 that the Constitution was signed by the Constitutional Convention.

National Apple Dumpling Day – A pastry filled with apples, cinnamon and sometimes raisins and then baked until it fills your home with its' delicious aroma. And after that, you get to eat it! It doesn't get any better than this.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary Day – The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) was given its’ name on this day in 1914, although the organization itself was begun in 1899. They work hard on behalf of American veterans in far more ways than I could have time to list here. The Ladies Auxiliary was established at that time as well with the mission of serving “the veterans of this country and our communities in honor of the sacrifices and commitment of every man and woman who has served in uniform.”

Wife Appreciation Day – Some say this is celebrated on the third Saturday of September, others say it's on the third Sunday. I'm going with the Sunday people. Show your wife how much you appreciate her today.

Sustainable House Day - This is an Australian day designed to promote environmentally friendly homes. The idea is to help give inspiration to those who want to make their homes and lives more progressive and help the encourage sustainable living. You can register here and go visit a Sustainable House near you….as long as you are near Australia. Perhaps someone in the United States could do something similar here. I would love to see what some of my neighbors are doing with their homes to help the environment, maybe there’s something that I can incorporate into my house. I thought that this was celebrated on the second Sunday of September but I see that this year they moved it to the 3rd Sunday. Clearly more research will be needed before next year.

National Neighborhood Day – Celebrated on the third Sunday in September, this is a day to make your neighborhood a caring community where everyone looks out for everyone else.

National Back To Church Sunday - On this day Churches all over America join together to invite their communities to come back to church. Lots of people stop attending church just because they get too busy with other things. It happens to me on a regular basis and I have to remind myself that church is very important. But life just has a way of throwing up roadblocks whether it’s family get togethers, or work schedules, or children’s activities, or just exhaustion from a week of work. We celebrate this on the third Sunday in September.

National Women’s Friendship Day - Another day to celebrate on the third Sunday in September, this is a day to celebrate the friendships that women share with each other. Get in touch with your friends today, visit and maybe share a meal with them if you can, if not then call them up and tell them how you feel about them.
