Universal Music Day - Celebrated on the second Saturday of October, this is a day to “encourage and inspire people everywhere to claim, reclaim or rejoice in one’s ability to sing and make Music.” Celebrations in St. Petersburg, Florida, have been cancelled because of all of the destruction of Hurricane Irma but you can certainly celebrate elsewhere as much as you like. The theme this year is, “Out of Chaos, WE Create Beauty!”
World Standards Day - Standards in many aspects of our society are very important to a well ordered country. Standards are what makes our lives run smoothly. Standards in manufacturing are what makes the same words mean the same thing through the entire industry. For example, women who wear a size 12 dress in one store can be reasonably certain that a size 12 dress in a different store would also be likely to fit. That is because of sizing standards. In the automotive industry, while there are many small differences, standards are the reason that each car has the same basic components like brakes, windshield wipers, and airbags (the ones installed in the cars, not the ones driving the cars). This is a day to honor the thousands of people over the years who have developed standards such as these for the advancement and welfare of societies all over the world.
National FRUMP (Frugal, Responsible, Unpretentious, Mature Persons) Day - If any of the words in the acronym fit you, this is your day. If not, well….we are all a work in progress to some degree.
Bald and Free Day - This is a day to take off your hat or scarf and flaunt whatever you have, or don’t have, on top of your head. Don’t let thinning or missing hair make you feel uncomfortable. You are beautiful just the way you are.
National Dessert Day – This is a good day that I think everyone will enjoy. We celebrate it by having some kind of dessert today. Which dessert you have is totally up to you. So many choices...it could take me all day to decide.
National Chocolate Covered Insects Day – OK, I'll just say this right out front. I will not be celebrating this one because I am disgusted just thinking about it. If you are a brave soul, go ahead and cover some insects with chocolate and chow down....without me.
national lowercase day - this is a day to ignore the rules about capitalizing names, places, the first letter of a sentence…and all the other capitalization rules that are occasionally hard to remember. just skip it all today and see who notices. in this day of texting odd combinations of numbers and letters and lack of punctuation, maybe no one will notice at all.
National Chess Day – Proclaimed by President Gerald Ford in 1976, this is a day to enjoy a good game of chess. If you don't have anyone to play it with you, play against yourself or teach your children how to play. Most places prefer to celebrate this day on a weekend so you will find festivities and chess games on or near the second Saturday in October, although I’m sure many will change that to suit their schedules.
International African Penguin Awareness Day – This day is all about raising awareness around the world about the plight of the African Penguin, an animal which is on the endangered species list. If you happen to be in South Africa today, head to Simon’s Town and enjoy their Penguin Festival. They have all kinds of penguin related events along with other things. This day is apparently celebrated on the second Saturday of October every year. But I have also seen sites that claim it is on the third Saturday in October or the second Monday in October, or every year on the 13th. So I am not really sure which is correct.
World Hospice and Palliative Care Day - Celebrated on the second Saturday of October, this is a day to celebrate and give support to hospice and palliative care around the world. It is a fact of life that eventually everyone will die when it is their time. So we need to be able to help them when the end is near and they need the most care. Sometimes more care than the family members can provide. Hospice and Palliative Care organizations help so that we don’t suffer any more than necessary. They help when we don’t know what to do.
National Family Bowling Day (or Kids Bowl Free Day) – This is is a fun day that you can spend bowling with your family. Some bowling alleys may even have free bowling for kids today as an extra incentive. It's an affordable activity that you can do as a family and most kids really enjoy it. This is a second Saturday in October day.
National Costume Swap Day - Also celebrated on the second Saturday in October, this is a day to get some extra life out of an outfit that you usually only use once. Your Halloween costume. Instead of tossing it into the attic, swap it with someone else. So someone can use yours and you can use a different costume without spending any more money.
