Today we celebrate:

National Call-in Day For Health Reform - On this day you are encouraged to call your Senators and your Representative in Congress to encourage them to reform our health care system. I don’t know about you but I have a big issue with the fact that you don’t know what anything is going to cost you beyond your co-pay until they decide to get around to sending you a bill sometimes weeks or even months later. What other industry in this country would survive if a customer had to do business with you and have no idea what you are going to charge them? None! But the health care system is flourishing. At this website they are more concerned with coverage issues such as making sure uninsured people are covered. But I think that cost is a huge factor here and prevents patients from shopping around to different health care providers until they find one they can afford.

The International Day of the Air Traffic Controller - There are more than 50,000 air traffic controllers in the world, and we depend on them every day to keep our airplanes from having collisions in the skies. They get the planes from one airport to another and from the ground to the air and back again safely. So this is a day to honor these dedicated and hardworking people. They have a very stressful job and get very little recognition for the very important life altering work they do.

National Brandied Fruit Day – A bowl of fruit, some sugar and a little brandy. That's all it takes to get a delicious bowl of brandied fruit.

Miss American Rose Day – This is a pageant that is focused on achievements and community service rather than beauty for girls and women of all ages. To celebrate this day, treat all the women in your life like beautiful American roses and perform some kind of community service.

National Mammography Day - Celebrated on the third Friday in October, this is a day for women to realize how important a mammogram is to their health. I just had mine not too long ago, if you are due for a mammogram, make sure you schedule it today.

Birth of the Bab - One of eleven holy days of the Baha’i Faith, this is the day that the Bab was born in 1819.  The Bab was the Prophet-Herald who proclaimed the coming of Baha’u’llah the Founder of the Baha’i Faith. This Holy Day was begun last night at sunset and ends at sunset today. The Faithful will celebrate with prayers, music, fellowship and devotional readings. I believe that the Universal House of Justice has decided to change when this event and the birth of the Baha’u’llah (the Twin Holy Birthdays) will be celebrated from now on. They will be celebrated on the first and second day after the eighth new moon after Naw-Ruz beginning on March 20, 2015. This means that the day of celebration will change from year to year. This day began last night and will end this evening.

Suspenders Day - Invented in the 1820s by Albert Thurston, who clearly had trouble keeping up his pants, this is a day to wear strips of cloth up over your shoulders and hooked to your pants. My question is, do men have as much trouble keeping these suspenders on their shoulders as I do my bra straps?

World Osteoporosis Day - This is a day to love your bones. We need to take care of the framework of our bodies. If our bones are weak, our bodies are not going to last long. So this is a day to think about what you are eating and whether or not you are eating food that will help keep your bones strong, or if you need to change the way you eat so you don’t end up with a broken pelvis the next time you trip on the curb.

National Pharmacy Buyer Day - This day is celebrated on the Friday of National Hospital & Health System Pharmacy Week which is the last full week in October….usually. Once again this year seems to be an exception to that rule, so we’ll have to see what the future holds. It is a day that was created in 2005 by Beth Meese in Illinois and the National Pharmacy Purchasing Association liked it and went with it in 2007. If you are not aware, as I was not until last year, a Pharmacy Buyer is responsible for making sure a pharmacy has the medicines it needs at any given moment. They take delivery of medicines, make sure it is correct, everything is there and checked in, and make sure everything is put where it belongs so it can be easily and quickly found and utilized. Then there are the invoices that need to be checked for accuracy and processed. There is a lot more to it, too much for me to go into here, so you will have to trust me that it’s an important job and not one that any pharmacy should do without.

World Student Day - Created by the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students, this is a day for everyone to pray for students all over the world, particularly ones that are facing difficult circumstances. We celebrate this day on the third Friday of October.
