Today we celebrate:

National Amaretto Day - Amaretto is an Italia name for “a little bitter”. It is made from bitter almonds or apricot kernels that are infused with brandy or alcohol giving it an almond flavor. I am not a fan, but there are quite a few of you out there who are. So have a little Amaretto today.

Humorous Day - Today we are to find our humorous side. If you try, you can find humor in nearly anything that happens to you. This is what comedians are really good at but we can train ourselves to do it too in order to take our own lives less seriously and find a way to brighten our day.

National Garlic Day – These seasoning powerhouses do more than keep away vampires. They have been used to season food for over 6,000 years according to this website. It has well known and proven health benefits as well as being rich in vitamins and minerals. It also has a great side benefit of helping to get rid of unwanted boyfriends/girlfriends. All you have to do is eat enough of it.

John Parker Day – On this day in 1775, John Parker, a farmer and Captain of the Lexington Militia, commanded his men at the famous Battle of Lexington. He is credited with saying to his men, “Stand your ground. Don't fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here.” Of course, his men either ignored his order or didn’t hear it because by some accounts one of them fired the shot that began the war. It is sad to note that John Parker was sick with Consumption at that time and died a few months later so he didn’t see their victory in the war that began with his men.

National Hanging Out Day Do you have a clothesline? Well, if not, you might want to hang one up today because this day was created by Project Laundry List and is a day to focus on conserving energy and saving money by hanging out your clothes to dry instead of using a dryer. Did you know that clothes dryers emit nearly 20 percent as much carbon dioxide as an average car?

Oklahoma City Bombing Commemoration Day – On this day in 1995, a truck bomb exploded next to the Alfred P. Murrah federal building killing 168 people, including 19 children, and injuring hundreds more. Two people were responsible, ( I will not name them because I don't want their names to be remembered, it would be far better to remember the names of the victims.) one of the perpetrators was executed, and the other one is serving life in prison.

Get To Know Your Customers Day – We had this day in January and you will see it again twice more this year because it is celebrated on the third Thursday of every quarter as a reminder to business owners about how important it is to know who your customers are and what their needs might be. Have a long conversation with your customers or take a customer out to lunch or dinner in order to get to know their needs so that you can better figure out how your business can meet those needs.

National Ask An Atheist Day – Celebrated on the third Thursday of April, this is a day to ask an atheist anything you want about their beliefs, or rather, unbeliefs. They don't wish to be yelled at or chastised or converted, but most will gladly participate in a civilized discussion.

National High Five Day – Celebrated on the third Thursday in April, this is a day for saving lives. This year the the High Five people are working to promote awareness of the effects that cancer has on everyone whether they are diagnosed with it or not. The event is similar in spirit to a dance-a-thon or a running event, but easier because this is a day for giving high fives to strangers all day long.

National D.A.R.E. Day – Every year, the President of the United States designates a day, usually on the third Thursday of April, to be a National D.A.R.E. Day. D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education and it involves police officers educating kids in school about the hazards of drugs.

International Pizza Cake Day - Wow! I actually know what this is! And I’ve done it! I admit that it took me a minute. Pizza cake? What the heck is pizza cake? Then it hit me...cake that looks like pizza. I made some of these for my daughter’s birthday years ago. I wish I could find a picture to share with you...but that was back before digital cameras existed in my universe and who has time to page through piles of pictures. But this is a day to make a delicious cake that looks like a pizza. It is celebrated on the third Thursday of April.

Tax Freedom Day –This is a theoretical day. The Tax Foundation, which is a tax research organization based in Washington D.C., has counted every dollar that is officially considered income and every dollar that is officially considered a tax at all levels of government throughout the country. According to them, this is the day in 2018 that the nation as a whole made enough money to pay the taxes of the nation as a whole. I confess that I don't find this to be personally relevant and I kind of wonder why they bother and whether any of my tax dollars are paying for this research.
