Today we celebrate:

Assistance Dog Day – This day is always celebrated on the first Monday of International Assistance Dog Week. These dedicated, loyal, hardworking, loving, heroic animals deserve every day of that week and more. But on this day in particular, we need to recognize the achievements of not only the dogs themselves, but their trainers. It is not easy to train a dog to be able to do everything these dogs can do and everyone involved, whether they use two legs or four, deserve all the recognition and praise they can get.

Work Like A Dog Day – Working like a dog means working really hard when you work and when you're not working, just nap wherever you happen to be. Make sure you turn around three times before you lay down.

National Oyster Day – Rumored to be an aphrodisiac, these delectable molluscs have over 100 different species and are known by a variety of names based on where they are grown. There are so many ways to cook them that I could have a blog with a different recipe every day for a year without repetition. Enjoy your favorite recipe today.

National Underwear Day - This is a day to display your underwear in public, in a creative way. If you knew about this ahead of time, then you were to tweet a photo of yourself and your underwear and send it to the address posted on the website. The voting happened between Aug. 1^st and Aug. 5^th and the winner will be revealed today. In addition, there is a group of people in NYC who are attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people in their underwear. If you want to participate, be at Times Square at Broadway between 46^th and 47^th St. at 5pm. To celebrate today, get your dog to assist you in working like a dog today. Make sure you wear your underwear in a prominent and noticeable way such as making an underwear purse and have some oysters for dinner.

If you are looking at this on Saturday, you will need to move down the page until you get to August 3rd. I had to put up Sunday's post a little early this weekend so that is what you see before you now.  It's important to celebrate things on the right day so don't be confused.

Today (Sunday) we celebrate:

Coast Guard Day – This is a day to commemorate the founding of the United States Coast Guard on this day in 1790 by the Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. Back then it was called the Revenue Marine. 

Single Working Women's Day – This is a day to honor the single working women of the world. They have to find the time to do everything themselves. Name a job around the house and the single working woman has to do it on top of working for a living so they have money to do all the things that have to be done.

International Forgiveness Day – Created by the Worldwide Forgiveness Alliance, an organization dedicated to spreading the “healing spirit of Forgiveness worldwide”, seventeen years ago, this is a day to forgive everyone you might be upset with in any way. It is a great way to reduce your stress and depression and make you a much happier person. http://www.forgivenessday.org/ 

National Doll Day – Celebrated on the first Sunday in August, this is a day to play with your dolls. Have a tea party with them and whomever else you would like to invite. Or let them help you throw a doll party. Have all of your friends come and bring their dolls.

Sister's Day – This is a day to show your sister how much you love and appreciate her. This is more for non-adolescent siblings since if adolescent happen to have a sister, they are more likely to want to pull her hair and kick her in the face than they are to appreciate her. The older you get, the more family means to you. My sister and I started being friends when we were teenagers and that love has only deepened with age.

Purple Heart Appreciation Day – This is a day to celebrate the 231^st Anniversary of the Badge of Military Merit which inspired the creation of the Purple Heart we use today.

To celebrate today, call up your sister and tell her how much you love her and miss her and tell her you forgive her for everything mean she used to do to you when you were younger. If she's a single working woman, tell her how much you respect her for doing such a good job with all of that work. Then invite her and all the other single working women you know to a doll party. Recruit some of the dolls to be the Coast Guard. The party can have a beach theme and the Coast Guard can patrol the waters keeping the party goers safe from any danger. See if any in your group know someone who earned a Purple Heart and if you can, go to their house to thank them for their service.

Today we celebrate:

National Watermelon Day – Today is a day to celebrate the juicy, comes in its own packaging, flavorful watermelon.

National Mustard Day – Celebrated on the first Saturday of August, this is a day to eat lots and lots of mustard. There is surprisingly, to me anyway, a Mustard Museum in Middleton, Wisconsin that has a whole mustard themed day planned for today with free hot dogs, music, games, etc. They use this event to raise money for a worthy charity. http://mustardmuseum.com/annual-national-mustard-day/

Grab Some Nuts Day – Nuts are a great source of protein and healthy fat. If you need a little protein burst to last until your next meal, a handful of nuts (assuming you are not allergic) is a great option. Or add some nuts to a salad to round out a vegetarian meal.

To celebrate today, have some watermelon with a side of mustard covered nuts.

Today we celebrate:

National Ice Cream Sandwich Day – I love ice cream sandwiches!!! There is an amazing variety of flavors for the ice cream and for the cookie, I'm sure you can find one you like too.

International Beer Day – This is a day to celebrate beer. But not just to have a beer at dinner and be done with it. No, this is INTERNATIONAL Beer Day which means that beer is going to be celebrated all over the world so you need to go out into the world in order to celebrate. And if you can find an international friend to share a beer with, so much the better. If you do go out to a bar or restaurant or friend's house to have a beer, please be mindful of the dangers of drinking and driving and either limit yourself to one beer or arrange for a designated driver or taxi for the ride home. You may find others claiming that this day is celebrated on a different day than this.

India Pale Ale Beer Day – India Pale Ale is a special kind of beer that is made a different way than regular beer. Do not ask me for the technical details. I found the information but I didn't understand it well enough to explain it to you.

Braham Pie Day – Celebrated on the first Friday in August, this is a day to go to Braham, Minnesota for their famous Pie Day. They turn this delicious dessert into an all day festival with pie baking and pie eating contests, collector car shows, church suppers, musical concerts, and plenty of children's events. http://www.pieday.com/ 

Satchmo Days – For the next three days, until August 4^th, there is a Satchmo Summerfest that celebrates Louis Armstrong, who was a famous jazz musician. http://www.wwoz.org/events/221792

To celebrate today, go to the Satchmo Summerfest in New Orleans in the morning, have a beer and chase it down with an ice cream sandwich. Then head to Minnesota for the pie festival in the afternoon and have a variety of different pies for dinner and dessert along with an India Pale Ale Beer.
