National
Pfeffernuesse Day – These are small round biscuits, called
cookies here in America. These particular cookies are filled with
ground nuts and spices and rolled in powdered sugar. They almost
look like a flatter version of Russian Tea Cakes.
Roots
Day – This is a day to celebrate your family history. Teach
your children where they come from and help them to learn from the
trials and tribulations as well as the successes of their ancestors.
Festivus
– Dan O'Keefe, a scriptwriter for Seinfeld,
wrote
an episode of the sitcom around this day which was a tradition in his
family. It has since become a popular part of our culture. It is
best described as a “parody holiday festival” that fights
consumerism.
To
celebrate today, eat pfeffernuesse while you tell your children all
about their roots. Then watch the Festivus episode of Seinfeld
so you learn all the rules to the day.
A big shout out to my readers in Antigua and Barbuda. Thank you for taking the time to read my humble blog.
