Monte Cristo Day - Today we take the time to enjoy a sandwich. Yes, I am serious. This is a particular sandwich, however. It is a fried ham and cheese sandwich. It is sometimes called a French Sandwich or a Toasted Ham Sandwich or even a French Toasted Cheese Sandwich. And there are variations that could include turkey or different kinds of cheese, or sprinkled with powdered sugar. It could be open faced or grilled or broiled. So anyway you happen to like it, feel free to eat it that way today.
Citizenship Day or Constitution Day – This day is to celebrate the adoption of our United States Constitution and to recognize everyone who has become United States citizens either by birth or by naturalization. It was on this day in 1787 that the Constitution was signed by the Constitutional Convention.
National Apple Dumpling Day – A pastry filled with apples, cinnamon and sometimes raisins and then baked until it fills your home with its' delicious aroma. And after that, you get to eat it! It doesn't get any better than this.
National Gymnastics Day - This is a day to celebrate the sport of gymnastics whether you are a spectator, coach, gymnast or supportive family member. The USA Gymnastics Association asks you to celebrate by taking creative photos of yourself showing off your gymnastic skills and sharing them on social media with a tag of #NGD2016 and @usagym in order to enter a contest. The most creative pictures will win 4 tickets to the Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Champions show stop that comes the closest.
VFW Ladies Auxiliary Day – The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) was given it's name on this day in 1914, although the organization itself was begun in 1899. They work hard on behalf of American veterans in far more ways than I could have time to list here. The Ladies Auxiliary was established at that time as well with the mission of serving “the veterans of this country and our communities in honor of the sacrifices and commitment of every man and woman who has served in uniform.”
Trail of Tears Commemorative Motorcycle Ride - There is a commemorative motorcycle ride that began yesterday with a kick off rally. But today the ride starts at 8am CDT in Bridgeport, Alabama and ends at 3pm in Waterloo, Alabama where the after party with food and music which will encompass the rest of the day so feel free to join in.
Boys' and Girls' Club Day for Kids – Boys and Girls Clubs all over America are celebrating this Day for Kids in a variety of ways. Check with your local club today to see what they have planned. This day is celebrated on the third Saturday in September.
Big Whopper Liar Day – Also celebrated on the third Saturday in September, this is a day to lie and lie big. Little fibs will just not do today, you need to come up with some big whoppers. Just be careful where and how and to whom you lie. If you have an encounter with police or the court system today, I would advise abstaining from celebrating this day until you are home.
International Eat An Apple Day – On the third Saturday in September, we take this day to celebrate the beginning of fall by eating an apple, the most popular fruit of the season.
International Coastal Cleanup Day – This is a day that is also celebrated on the third Saturday in September. We honor the day by reducing the amount of trash we throw out and by cleaning up the trash lining our coasts. We need to keep our oceans clean.
Puppy Mill Awareness Day - Yet another day that is celebrated on the third Saturday in September, this is a day to be aware of the problems associated with puppy mills, also known as puppy farms. These are commercial dog breeders who are more concerned with making money than with the well being of the dongs. They keep them in cages in deplorable condition. The mothers are sometimes kept pregnant almost constantly and the dogs are frequently sold with severe health problems. This does not mean to imply that all dog breeders do this. There are tons of good, reputable, dog loving people who take very good care of the dogs that they breed. Make sure you find one of them if you are looking to purchase a dog.
Responsible Dog Ownership Day - This day was created by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and promotes responsible dog ownership. It isn’t easy to take care of a creature that is dependent on you for so much but if you are going to own a dog, you must be responsible for it. Believe me, the love you get back makes it totally worth it. This is another third Saturday in September celebration.
National Seat Check Saturday - Car seats for children go a long way to keeping kids safe in the event of a car accident, but only if they are installed properly in the car. It isn’t easy to do, trust me on this, I’ve had three kids and we’ve used many different kinds of car seats. So you should go to a professional to check and make sure you have installed yours correctly. This appears to be celebrated on the third Saturday in September.
