National Ampersand Day - Created by Chaz DeSimone, founder of AmperArt, this is a day to “acknowledge & applaud the ampersand.” He chose this date because many of the letters of the date can be created by using ampersands in various fonts. If you look on his website, he explains.
National Pledge of Allegiance Day - On this day in 1892, the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America first appeared in printed form when it was published in The Youth’s Companion. The Pledge was written by Francis Bellamy for the 400th anniversary of the discovery of this great continent. We celebrate this day by proclamation of President George Bush made on August 15th, 1989. He has requested that we celebrate by displaying the Flag, reciting the Pledge and participate in other “appropriate activities,” whatever that means.
National Date-Nut Bread Day – Dates and nuts mixed into a quick bread. Fast, easy and delicious. Find some good recipes here.
International Literacy Day – This is a day celebrated by schools and libraries for the purpose of highlighting and fighting against the problem of illiteracy. Read a book today, help a youngster practice their reading skills or, if you have someone really young, start work on teaching them letters and their sounds, it's a great way to start them on the path to becoming a literate adult.
Pardon Day – On this day in 1974, President Gerald Ford, amid great controversy, pardoned former President Richard Nixon for any crimes he may have committed while in office. Ford said he just wanted to end all the uproar created by Watergate but there were many who disagreed with his decision and thought that Richard Nixon should have been the first former President to go to prison.
Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses Day – These are the nurses who help take care of people of all ages with blood and cancer diseases. They frequently go above and beyond the call of duty to provide whatever support these patients and their families need.
Virgin Mary Day – Celebrated exactly 9 months after the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, but is, oddly enough, nowhere near the day the birth of Christ is celebrated, which confuses me. Nevertheless, this is the day to have a feast that celebrates not the birth of Christ but the birth of Mary to her parents, Joachim and Anna, who also had an angel appear to them and tell them that they would finally have a baby after years of unsuccessful fertility treatments.
World Physical Therapy Day – This is a day to raise awareness of the remarkable benefits that physical therapists can bestow upon their patients. Physical therapy helps people heal faster from surgeries or injuries and get back up onto their feet and fulfilling a normal lifestyle far more quickly than they would without it. If they would even be able to resume a normal lifestyle without it. I have some experience with this as I utilized the skills of a physical therapist nearly 18 years ago and I am grateful for the help he was able to give me.
National Iguana Awareness Day - Are you aware of the creatures called iguanas that we share our planet with? They can be a somewhat fearsome looking lizard, but apparently make great pets if you are a lover of somewhat less than cuddly creatures. Now some people might think I am anti-lizard from this post. That is far from the truth. I love lizards. I just prefer to admire from afar the ones that live in someone else’s house....in a cage. There are some websites that claim that this day is celebrated on the 9th or 13th instead of today and I was not able to determine which is correct.
Stand Up 2 Cancer Day - On the second Friday of September we remember that every single one of us is affected by cancer at some point in our lives. Whether we are afflicted with it ourselves or we have to watch our loved ones fight that battle. It is a disease that takes on many forms which is why it is so hard to find a cure. But one day we will find a cure for all the different varieties of cancer out there.
National 401(k) Day - Created in 1996 by the Profit Sharing/401(k) Council of America, this is a day that is celebrated on the Friday after Labor Day every year. On this day, plan sponsors will be providing information about their plans to participants and stressing the importance of saving for retirement.
