National Good Teen Day - This is an actual National day created by Congress and approved by the President in October 1992 and first celebrated on this day in 1993. The purpose is to understand the many physical and emotional changes and challenges that teenagers experience; to acknowledge that teens should be recognized for the good and the potential that is within each one of them instead of just for their intelligence, skills and abilities. This is a day to focus on the positive qualities of America’s teenagers and to help them realize their true potential.
Prohibition Remembrance Day - On this day in 1919, the 18th amendment was passed. It established the prohibition of the sale, manufacture and transportation of alcohol in the United States beginning one year later. There were a few people who were happy about it, but the vast majority were not and commenced breaking the law whenever possible. This led to the rise of organized crime, but that’s another story for another day.
National Fig Newton Day – Created by Charlie Roser, a cookie maker from Ohio, who sold his creation to Kennedy Biscuit Works, which later became Nabisco. In 1891, James Henry Mitchell invented a funnel within a funnel device which allowed the Newton's (they were originally named after the town of Newton nearby the factory) to become mass produced.
National Nothing Day - Interestingly enough, this day was suggested in 1972 by Harold Pullman Coffin, who clearly was tired of celebrating something every day even back then when there weren't nearly as many things to celebrate as there are today. So today is a day to not celebrate anything. So tough luck if your birthday is today, we are not celebrating it.
International Hot And Spicy Food Day – Do you have an international dish that is hot and spicy? If so, today is the day to make it for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Appreciate A Dragon Day – Donita K. Paul created this day to promote the release of her book, Dragonspell, in 2004. Read about some of your favorite dragons today. There are even some real dragons alive today if you know where to look. Although I haven’t seen any flying dragons in a while, keep your eyes peeled. It’s a magical day when anything can happen if you believe hard enough.
Religious Freedom Day – Today celebrates the adoption, by the Virginia General Assembly, of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom on this day in 1786. This became the basis for the First Amendment to the United States Constitution guaranteeing our right to have the freedom to practice any religion we choose.
Printing Ink Day - Begun in 1976, this is a day to recognize the importance of printing ink in our daily lives. We read something somewhere every day. More and more it is computerized and on a screen, but we still print things out ourselves and read things that others have printed on a daily basis. Thank you Ben Franklin for the ability to do that. This day is celebrated on the Tuesday closest to January 16th.
Rid The World Of Fad Diets And Gimmicks Day – The Tuesday of the third full week of January is the day to realize the uselessness of fad diets that don't work long term, and sometimes not even short term, along with the gimmicks you can spend tons of money on that don't reduce the weight of anything but your wallet.
Book Publishers Day - This is a day to celebrate those wonderful people who bring us the books that we treasure. Check the websites of your favorite publishers, a few of them might have special deals or events to celebrate this day.
