National Popcorn Day – This is
my daughter's favorite day. She lives on popcorn. Try some fun
popcorn related activities with the kids today. Decorate the house
with popcorn strings, mix popcorn with different ingredients and see
what it tastes like. Fill a container with popcorn and guess how
many kernels are in it. Have popcorn fights. Your imagination (and
tolerance for messes) is your only boundary.
Confederate Memorial Day – This
day honors those who died during the Civil War while fighting for the
Confederate States of America. It has other names in some other
states and is mostly celebrated in the southern states.
National Gun Appreciation Day –
Begun last year, this is a day
to demonstrate American's support of their 2nd
Amendment right to own a gun. I know this is a very controversial
subject with strong feelings on either side and I am gifted (cursed?)
with the ability to see and understand both sides of the issue but
you may feel free to comment with your opinion if you wish.
Peter Durand |
Tin Can Day – The tin can was
patented in 1810 by Peter Durand and the ability to store food for
long periods of time suddenly became possible. However, the can
opener was patented by William Lyman in 1870. Hmmmm. Does anyone
else see a 60 year problem here?
World Religion Day – Celebrated on the third Sunday in January, this is a day to acknowledge all of the many, many, many different religions in the world.
To celebrate today, take your antique
gun to a civil war reenactment and play the part of a Confederate
soldier. Make sure you bring a few tin cans of food with you to
share as long as you remembered your can opener. Then explain your
religious beliefs to your children over a bowl of delicious popcorn.
