National Chocolate Day - There are several of these days sprinkled throughout the year. They are probably sponsored by different people but whoever created them for whatever reason, they clearly share one thing at least. A definite love of chocolate.
Separation of Church and State Day - A concept that is stated in the United States Constitution, and adopted by several other countries this is a day to honor the separation of Church and State. I’m sure you already understand this idea, but in case there are any young people out there reading this I will explain that this means that the Church, in any form, doesn’t have any influence over the decisions of the government and vice versa.
International Animation Day - On this day in 1892 in Paris, France, the first public performance of Emile Reynaud’s Theatre Optique was shown at the Grevin Museum. We started celebrating this and all the animated films that came after in 2002. It has spread to countries all over the world and on every continent….well, except maybe Antarctica. So today watch an animated film of some kind made with any kind of medium.
Statue of Liberty Dedication Day - On this day in 1886, the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France, was dedicated. It represents the strong friendship between the U.S. and France since the American Revolution. It is one of America’s most famous landmarks. Millions of people have come from all over the world just to see it. I guess that makes it pretty sad that I have lived in New York almost my whole life and I have still never been to Ellis Island to see it.
St. Jude's Day – This is a day to honor St. Jude, the Patron Saint for the Hopeless and Despaired. He was one of Jesus Christ's apostles and was martyred around 65 AD.
Plush Animal Lover’s Day – This is a day to show your stuffed animals how much you love them. Carry them around with you as long as you don't have too many. If you have as many as my daughter does, you'll have to either pick your favorite to hug today or switch them out periodically.
Wild Foods Day – On this day we celebrate raw foods that are gathered outside and eaten without any kind of processing. Examples include nuts and fruit and vegetables straight from the gardens or trees. If you go out to gather your own wild foods, make sure you can identify the edible vs. non-edible (a.k.a. poisonous) varieties.
National Pit Bull Awareness Day – This is a day, begun in 2007 by Jodi Preis of Bless the Bullys, to promote the truth about pit bulls. Pit bulls have a very bad image these days but the truth is that not all pit bulls are as vicious as the ones you hear about on the news. Most of them are wonderful family dogs who would never hurt anyone. Do your research and find out the truth before you make any decisions about them. I believe this is celebrated on the 4th Saturday in October.
Make A Difference Day – This is a day that is celebrated on the fourth Saturday of October, and is a day to make a difference in someone's life.....in a good way. I figured that I probably better throw that last part in there just in case there was a question in your mind. Think about what you can do to make someone’s life better today.
National Forgiveness Day - On the last Saturday of October, we celebrate forgiveness in the United States of America. In the last few months we have had Global Forgiveness and International Forgiveness Days but this one is just for one country apparently. So encourage people to ask for forgiveness today and be prepared to forgive anyone who has wronged you. It is important for your health to release the anger and pain you are holding onto.
