Pet Owners Independence Day - Our pets have a pretty good life, don’t they? If you are a good pet owner, then your pet really has nothing to complain about. Well, this is a day to change places with our pets. Life life like your pet does. Find a sunbeam and enjoy lying in it. Chase a ball for a while, go for a walk and ….well, you probably don’t want to go quite that far, you might get arrested. The point is that you should relax and enjoy yourself today.
World Heritage Day - This day was created by the United Nations in 1983 which recommended that all “Member States examine the possibility of declaring 18 April each year ‘International Monuments and Sites Day’.” Their goal is to encourage people to make the effort to preserve their cultural heritage. We need to remember where we came from if we are going to know who we are and why we do the crazy things we do.
Zimbabwe Independence Day - According to the Holidays, Festivals, and Celebrations of the World Dictionary by Cherie D. Abbey, on this day in 1980, after many years of struggle, the white minority in charge of Zimbabwe agreed to honor multiracial elections, ending nearly 100 years of white rule over an African nation.
National Animal Crackers Day – Begun in 1902 by the company now known as Nabisco, these crackers were originally called Barnum's Animals.
Newspaper Columnists Day – On this day in 1945, Ernie Pyle was killed. He was a well-known and well-respected newspaper columnist who was covering World War II. He lived with the soldiers, saw what they saw, ate what they ate, felt what they felt, and was killed by a Japanese sniper.
Adult Autism Awareness Day – The issue of Autism in children is well known and growing. But those children grow up into adulthood and you just don’t hear about the issues that they face and the fact that it is harder to find help. They are people just like everyone else and today we recognize the issues they face with interpersonal relationships, careers, college educations and living on their own. Every person with autism has his/her own unique issues and abilities, it’s not a one size fits all disorder so the solutions and support need to be prepared for that.
National Velociraptor Awareness Day - This appears to be a tongue-in-cheek day, at least I hope it is. I have seen several sites, one of which I added here, which describe the hunting techniques of the velociraptor and the best way to avoid becoming prey. I compare this to the Zombie Apocalypse that my son used to prepare for on a daily basis not too long ago. It was puzzling for me at first, but I grew to take his plans to barricade all entrances into the house and destroy the steps going up to the back deck at the first hint that the Zombie invasion has occurred, with a grain of salt. So, it doesn’t hurt to keep your eyes open for what may be stalking you and preparing to turn you into a snack. Just remember, velociraptors hunt in packs.
World Amateur Radio Day – On this day in 1925, the International Amateur Radio Union was founded. The theme for last year’s celebration was, “ITU & IARU: Celebrating 150 years of Advancing the Telecommunication Art”. I'm not sure what the theme is this year. If I can find out, I'll update this post. Check the website for stations to listen to.
National Lineman Appreciation Day - This is a day to honor the hard work of the men and women who work so hard in all kinds of inclement weather because power outages never seem to happen in good weather. We depend upon our power for just about everything we do so make sure you show them your appreciation today.
National Stress Awareness Day - This is a day to spread awareness of the fact that stress affects us in ways we don’t think about on a regular basis. It can have a ripple effect throughout our bodies and show up in many ways such as heart disease, loss of hair, lines on the face and innumerable others. So try to be aware of how much stress you are under today and look for ways to ease your stress so you can be healthier. This is celebrated on the day after Tax Day for a very good reason.
