Today we celebrate:

International Fact-Checking Day - Fact checking is absolutely essential to any journalist, and increasingly so, for regular readers as well. Many people are simply believing everything they read that their friends share on social media, without checking to see if the information is accurate. This causes a lot of misunderstandings and increases the spread of false information which can impact our lives in tangible ways such as causing businesses to close because of a false news story that convinces patrons to avoid doing business at a particular establishment.

National Ferret Day - This is a day to celebrate Ferrets. We do this by recognizing how cute and intelligent they are and by learning about ferrets and how to give them the care that they need. The United Kingdom celebrates this day on May 5th.

National Peanut Butter And Jelly Day – Celebrating a basic staple for children's lunches. There was a time when peanut butter and mint jelly sandwiches were all my daughters would eat in sandwich form. Yes, I said MINT jelly. That green jelly that most people only put on lamb dishes.

International Children's Book Day – Sponsored by the International Board On Books For Young People, this day is celebrated with writing contests and author events. Today was chosen for this particular celebration because it is Hans Christian Andersen's birthday.

Reconciliation Day – Begun by Ann Landers, the late advice columnist, today is a day for mending relationships. Take the first step and reach out in friendship. You never know where that might take you. There is also a Reconciliation Day celebrated today in South Africa but it is a day to celebrate the end of the violence that happened between the black and white communities during Apartheid.

World Autism Awareness Day – This is a day to raise awareness of the increasing prevalence of autism. Autism organizations have been celebrating this day for 8 years with fundraising for research and treatments as well as awareness events. Autism affects so many more families today than it did when I was a kid, we HAVE to figure out what is causing it. When I was younger, autism struck 1 out of 250 children. Now, I just heard on the radio a couple of days ago, it affects 1 out of 68. This is important, people, we have to figure out what is causing this because if we don’t, there will soon be more children with autism than there are children without it.

National Love Your Produce Manager Day – I think most of us could use more fresh produce in our diets. A great produce manager is vital if you want your grocery store to stock the best and freshest produce possible.

Dyngus Day – This is the Polish term for Easter Monday. Each country has a different way of celebrating. I was surprised to read that traditionally boys wake girls up by pouring water on their heads and hitting them on the legs with long, thin twigs or switches made from willow or birch tree branches. The website I reference here says the water is “sprinkled” and the legs are “tapped” but I think we all know what would really happen if you're talking about brothers and sisters. It says at the website below that ladies would retaliate by throwing dishes and crockery. That seems like a rather violent custom to me but I don’t judge. It also said that traditionally girls would then return the favor on Tuesday. I don’t think I would bother to wait that long.

Easter Monday - The day after Easter is a holiday in some countries. It can be known as “Bright Monday” or “Renewal Monday”. In Australia, this is a public holiday with lots of people getting the day off from work. Egyptians celebrate it as a national holiday as opposed to a religious one. And in Ireland, it is a day of remembrance of the people who died in the Easter Rising in 1916.

White House Easter Egg Roll – This has been going on for more than 130 years and this year is no exception. But don't plan on dropping by to participate, they have a lottery system in place to pick the people who will get to go.

National Fun Day - Celebrated on the first Monday of April, this is a day for FUN. Of course, fun is different for everyone. My idea of fun is to read a really good book while cuddled up with my husband. My husband’s idea of fun is going hiking in the woods. Not very compatible activities in the short term, but we have all day, so make a few compromises so everyone gets some time for what they think is fun.

Sweet Potato Day - Sweet Potatoes have a lot of vitamins and nutrients built right in naturally. They are much healthier than white potatoes. But we don’t eat as many of them as we do white potatoes. Let’s change that today and have some baked sweet potato fries for dinner. This day is also known as Tater Day in some areas and is celebrated on the first Monday in April.
