Today we celebrate:

Peace Officer's Memorial Day – This is a day to pay tribute to the peace officers who work so hard to keep our country, states, counties and cities safe. It is a dangerous and demanding job and they catch a lot of flack for the work that they do. But regardless, they are always there when we need them.

Hyperemisis Gravidarum Awareness Day – This is the second annual celebration of this day created by the Hyperemisis Education and Research Foundation (HER). This is a disease that affects thousands of pregnant women. Symptoms associated with it include unrelenting nausea, weight loss, vomiting, malnutrition and dehydration. It usually lasts longer than the first trimester and for some it can last for the entire pregnancy.

International Day Of Families – This is a day that is endorsed by the United Nations to celebrate family in all of its forms.

International MPS Awareness Day – This is a day to honor everyone who has suffered from this disease as well as everyone who works to find a cure. MPS is an acronym for Mucopolysaccharidos disease. This is a genetic lysosomal disease (LD) that causes a body to be unable to produce enzymes which help cells to perform their duties properly. A person with this disease suffers with progressively more severe organ damage the longer they live.

National Tuberous Sclerosis Day – This is a genetic disorder that causes non-malignant tumors to form in the brain, eyes, heart, lungs, kidney and skin. These tumors can cause many, many challenging health issues for the people with this disorder such as autism, seizures, intellectual disabilities and developmental delays. The severity of these issues varies widely and many people with this disorder are able to lead independent lifestyles and accomplish great things in challenging jobs like scientists, doctors and lawyers.

Nylon Stockings Day – On this day in 1940, Julian Hill's invention appeared in stores for the first time and women were liberated from having to wear cotton, wool or silk stockings. They liked them so much they bought 780,000 on that very first day. These were the old fashioned kind that you had to keep up with garters.

National Employee Health & Fitness Day – On the third Wednesday of May, Vanderbilt University recognizes this as a day to stress physical activity and eating healthy. They have many events throughout the day to celebrate including places where you can go to get a healthy breakfast-to-go, Zumba classes outside, a walking relay and a 3 mile run.

Straw Hat Day – Today is the day for men to put away their felt hats and take out their straw hats for the summer. Summer is here (ok, not officially, but it's hot enough to be summer anyway) and felt hats don't come back until some time in September. That is, if men still wear these types of hats. As you can probably tell, this day has been around for a while. You may also see it celebrated on different days in different parts of the country.

Turn Beauty Inside Out Day – This is a day to look inside yourself and see the beauty within. Physical beauty is skin deep and the most beautiful person in the world could be a hag on the inside and no one wants to know her. Today is a day to let your inner beauty shine through to the world.

To celebrate today, educate yourself on the various genetic diseases so you can appreciate the challenges of the people who suffer from them. Maybe it will make you a little less judgmental as you remember that not all health issues can be seen. We never know what challenges other people face until we walk in their shoes. Then put on some stockings and a straw hat and take your family for a good long walk. While you are walking, greet everyone you see so they can tell how beautiful you are by the warmth and joy shining through your eyes. When you come across a peace officer, make sure you thank them for their hard work in keeping you and your family safe.

Today we celebrate:

Dance Like A Chicken Day – You all know the Chicken Dance, I'm sure. Well, today you'll be dancing like a chicken all day long.

National Chocolate Chip Day – Chocolate chips are a treat all by themselves but they are even better when baked in other things like cookies and brownies and cakes. I'm making myself hungry.

National Buttermilk Biscuit Day – Flaky, buttery, deliciousness would be a great addition to dinner this evening.

The Stars And Stripes Forever Day – This is a day to revel in a spirit of nationality. Let our stars and stripes fly forever.

Shavuot – This Jewish holiday begins this evening at sunset and ends on the evening of May 16th. This day is known as the Feast of Weeks, and is associated with the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai.

Underground America Day – Created in 1974 by Malcolm Wells, this is a day to think about the ground. It may surprise you to know that many people live within it instead of on it like the rest of us and it is definitely something to consider if you find yourself thinking that you would really like to have more grass to mow and more room to plant flowers. Mr. Wells has some celebration ideas you may like to consider at: http://www.malcolmwells.com/uaday.html

To celebrate today, dance like a chicken while you bake some chocolate chip buttermilk biscuits, in your underground kitchen with the American flag hanging on the wall, for the Shavuot feast.

Today we celebrate:

Frog Jumping Day – I'm not sure where this day came from although I did find speculation that the idea originated from Mark Twain, if not the day itself. It is a day to either jump like a frog, or partake in frog jumping races.

Leprechaun Day – This is a day dedicated to these wonderful, Irish elves. See if you can find one today. If you do, don't let him go until he leads you to his pot of gold.

National Apple Pie Day – Celebrated today and on December 3rd, this is a day to revel in that delicious apple filling and that tender, flaky crust. Hmmmm, I can smell it now. It has consistently ranked at the top of the list on surveys asking people what their favorite dessert is. It is a dish that is older than the Pilgrims who colonized America so it is not really an American dish, but it has become one that is associated with all things American.

National Women's Check-up Day – This is a day for women to make sure they are healthy by going to the doctor for a checkup. I know, you don't have time for that. But you also don't have time for a serious, and possibly avoidable, health issue like diabetes or heart disease. Keep on top of your health and you will have a better chance of catching problems, and fixing them, before they are real problems.

To celebrate today, jump like a frog everywhere you go, while you keep your eyes open and watch for those slippery, tricky leprechauns. If you find one and can keep a hold of it long enough, you'll be rich. If you're a woman, head to the doctor for a checkup, and then indulge in a dessert of apple pie, of course. Enjoy!

Today we celebrate:

Limerick Day – Edward Lear was born on this day in 1812. While he didn't create limericks, which are an Irish form of poetry, he was very well known for writing great limericks.

Mother's Day – Always celebrated on the second Sunday in May, this is a day to celebrate mothers, or mother figures everywhere. Typically we celebrate with cards and gifts, but if you have your own way of celebrating with your mother, or the one who is like a mother to you, feel free to do so. http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/us/mothers-day

National Nutty Fudge Day – I'm not a real fudge lover and I don't care for nuts with my chocolate, but if you feel differently, today is the day for you.

International Nurses Day – This day is celebrated every year on Florence Nightingale's birthday and it is a day to honor nurses all over the world. It takes a caring and dedicated person to be a nurse and we depend on them every time we go to any doctor's office or the hospital.

Mothers At The Wall Day – This is a day for mothers who have lost a child to war. There is nothing more devastating that losing your child. If you have lost one who went off to fight for our country, you have the heartfelt sympathies of an entire nation at your feet as you go to the Vietnam Memorial Wall for the special Mother's Day ceremony.

Odometer Day – Today is a day to reminisce with your vehicle. Think back to where you have been with your vehicle for however many miles are on it. Where have you gone and what have you done? I hope it was something fun and memorable and worth reminiscing about.

International Awareness Day for Chronic Immunological And Neurological Diseases (CIND) – This day has been used for spreading awareness for CIND since 1992. These diseases include Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Fibromyalgia (ME/CFS), Gulf War Syndrome, and Multiple Chemical Sensitivites. This day was chosen as it is Florence Nightingale's birthday and she is believed to have suffered from ME/CFS. http://www.may12th.org/

To celebrate today, take a trip to the Wall in Washington D.C. and hug all of those mothers who have lost their children in wars. On the way home, think about all the other trips you've taken in your car. Stop and pick up some nutty fudge for your own mother and drop it off along with some more hugs and a big thank you for being such a wonderful mother. Then you can stop at the local hospital or doctor's office that treats CIND and recite for the nurses and patients a funny limerick to liven up their day.
