Today we celebrate:

Microvolunteering Day - There are a lot of people out there who are eager to volunteer their time and energy and help others. Some of them dedicate their lives to a cause or at least spend many, many hours working for one. However, what about the people who lead very busy lives already and don’t have the ability to dedicate great quantities of time. This is a day for them. Microvolunteering is all about getting together with other busy people and doing little things to further a cause. Maybe you can’t make much of a difference with the small amount of time you have available, but if you get together with a dozen other people who also have a small amount of time, then together you can accomplish a great deal.

National Griper’s Day - A gripe is a small complaint. Something that is relatively inconsequential but irritating.  And this is the day to get it out into the open and stop bottling it up inside. For example, when my daughter gets ready for school in the morning, she brushes her hair over the sink and leaves little pieces of hair all over the sink. Then she goes to school and I go in the bathroom to find a sinkful of little bits of hair. Now I have asked her to clean up after herself, but she doesn’t. This isn’t a huge deal...but it’s annoying to me so that makes it a gripe. Anyone else want to share?

World Art Day - This is a day to unite the entire art world in all of it’s many forms.  It was created by the General Assembly of the AIAP/IAA (International Association of Art) World in 2011 and today we are asked to spread “art awareness” all around the world. They suggest that museums and galleries stay open late into the night. They would like there to be conferences and panel discussions about art, and perhaps artists could venture into public places where they can share their skills with their communities and inspire others to find their inner artist.

Jackie Robinson Day - On this day in 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first man of color to play major league baseball. It was a rough time for him. Well, that’s putting it mildly. It was an EXTREMELY rough time for him, but he kept his temper in check and proved his ability over and over again until his teammates, opposing team players and the fans finally accepted and then loved him. Now, because of him, we can’t imagine having segregated teams today.

National Glazed Spiral Ham Day – Well, make sure you have enough time to bake one of these today because this is dinner. And no cheating with the uncut hams, this is a day for the spiral cut ones only.

Rubber Eraser Day – My children and I go through erasers at an alarming rate. Are we the only ones who are so mistake prone?  All I know is that I definitely appreciate my erasers.

Titanic Remembrance Day – This is a day to remember the victims of the Titanic which struck an iceberg on April 14th at 11:40pm and sank shortly thereafter on the 15th in 1912 causing the deaths of over 1,500 people.

McDonald's Day – On this day in 1955, the first McDonald's franchise opened in Des Plaines, Illinois. While it is not known as the healthiest place to eat, if you want to eat healthy you can choose to do so and have their salads, which are not too bad.

Take A Wild Guess Day – This is a day for making guesses, following your gut instinct and trusting your intuition. Go ahead and try it!

That Sucks Day – I'm not a fan of bad language and I contemplated changing the name to That Stinks Day, but then I would be giving you false information so I'm bearing with it in the spirit of the day. This is a day for wallowing in misery and not seeing the good in anything, not a state of being that I am comfortable with, I prefer to be positive but I guess that will have to wait until tomorrow. It is a bit ironic that this day falls on the same day as Titanic Remembrance Day.

Go Fly A Kite Day - Celebrated on the third Sunday in April, this is a day to do just what the name says and go fly a kite. I have never flown a kite. I’ve seen it done by others. I have watched Mary Poppins about a hundred thousand times, after all. I know the song. But I really can’t think of anything more boring than holding a string with a wind surfing kite on the other end.
