Truck Driver Day - Today we honor the truckers that we depend upon to transport our belongings, good for sale, equipment, and anything else we need moved from one place to another. Be considerate when you drive among them, remember they need more time and distance in order to stop so don’t pull in front of them until you can see the entire cab of the truck in your rearview mirror. Give them a friendly wave, maybe you’ll get one to wave back.
World Elephant Day - Begun in 2012, this is a day to focus on the dangers to African and Asian elephants, their numbers are dwindling because of loss of habitat, poachers, and captivity. They are an incredibly intelligent and social species with long memories and the ability to feel empathy, something unusual in an animal. And yet, there are some who will pay any price to hunt them and others who don’t care what the cost to the world is as long as they get paid for the elephant pieces and parts they sell on the black market.
National Middle Child’s Day - Today is a day to focus on that person of the family who is stereotypically ignored. This would, of course, be the middle child. My son is our middle child and he is always quick to point out that we spoil both of his sisters all the time, but not him. Of course, his sisters each make the same claim, but this is not a day for first and last children so we will not pay them any attention right now.
National Julienne Fries Day - To julienne fries (also known as French Fries), you must cut your potatoes into long thin strips, then you can either deep fry them (very unhealthy), or you can coat them with a little bit of olive oil and bake them. That’s what I do when I make them at home and I highly recommend it.
National Sewing Machine Day - This is a day to celebrate sewing machines. The newest machines are computerized and can do some pretty impressive things. If you don’t use yours too often, take it out and sew something today. But if you use your sewing machine a lot, then today is a day to give it a well earned vacation. Take it to a sewing machine spa to get a good cleaning and massage by a well trained professional. These machines that are used every day should be cleaned and oiled every day. If you only use yours sporadically then you should perform maintenance before each project.
IBM PC Day – On this day in 1981, IBM introduced its’ new 5150 Personal Computer. For a while, it blew it's competition out of the water and led the technological field. At least until the competition caught up.
Vinyl Record Day – On this day in 1877, Thomas Edison invented the phonograph and the stage was set for the later invention of vinyl records. When I was young, I had a record player in my bedroom and I thought it was pretty cool that I could play my favorite records over and over again in my own room so no one else would complain. Now I have kids and my record player doesn't work anymore so they have never even heard a record play. They don't seem upset by that as they listen to their CD's and iPods.
Celebrate Your Lakes Day - This is a day created by the New Hampshire State Senate in 1995, to be celebrated on the second Saturday in August, to recognize the significance of New Hampshire lakes and ponds as a vital natural resource. They stress the importance of maintaining the quality of the water so it can be enjoyed for years and years to come.
National Garage Sale Day – On the second Saturday of August every year, we celebrate this great way of cleaning out things you don't use anymore from your house. One person’s trash is another person's treasure, after all. And instead of filling our landfills, why not let someone else get some use out of the stuff you no longer need.
