Today we celebrate:

Dress Like A Dork Day - While I am sure that no one out there dresses like a dork on a regular basis, we all have those days when we just don’t care about matching. Well, ok, maybe that’s just me. In any case, today is a day for everyone to dress unfashionably, mix it up a bit, wear argyle socks with plaid pants, suspenders and don’t forget the enormous glasses taped together so they don’t fall apart.

New Friends Day - You can never have too many friends, in my humble opinion. While I certainly would never suggest you get rid of old friends unless the relationship has become toxic to you, you should always keep an open mind and open heart to welcome in new friends that you could meet at any moment.

World Pediatric Bone and Joint (PB&J) Day - This is a day to bring awareness to a problem that I, for one, never really give much thought to. Children can have a plethora of problems with bones and joints just like adults, and if they are not taken care of it can affect their growth. So today is a day to focus on the musculoskeletal health of children and bring awareness to parents and doctors of the treatments that are available to help them.

Evaluate Your Life Day – This is a day to look at your life very carefully. Are you working toward achieving your goals, are you a good person, are you depressed and need to make some positive changes? Be brutally honest with yourself and be prepared to change things that need to be changed.

Diwali – Known as the “Festival of Lights”, this is a Hindu festival and is an official holiday in India and many other surrounding nations. It is a day when families gather together, clean the house and light small clay lamps filled with oil which signify the triumph of good over evil. The lamps are kept on in the clean house in order to welcome the goddess Lakshmi and make her feel at home.

National Seafood Bisque Day – Creamy and delicious. If you are a seafood fan, try your hand at making some today.

Rainforest Day - This is a day to recognise how very important rainforests are to the climate of the entire world. The Amazon alone creates more than 20 percent of the world’s oxygen supply. The rainforests are dwindling at an alarming rate because of logging and farming. We have to work to raise awareness and try to save them before it’s too late. I understand the plight of the farmers, they are trying their best to make a living to support their families. But everyone needs to understand that the fate of the world is at stake here.

Conflict Resolution Day - Celebrated on the third Thursday of October, this is a day that was created in 2005 by ACR (Association for Conflict Resolution) in order to: promote creative and peaceful methods of resolving conflicts such as mediation, and arbitration; promote the use of conflict resolution techniques in families and just about every organization you can find; recognize the efforts of people who work to resolve conflicts peacefully; spread their message and techniques around the world.

Get to Know Your Customers Day – This is the fourth Get to Know Your Customers Day for the year. It is celebrated on the third Thursday of each quarter.  Use the opportunity to find out what your customers need so that you can be better prepared to provide it.

International Credit Union Day - Celebrated on the third Thursday in October ever since 1948, this is a day to recognize the achievements of credit unions around the world and give members a chance to get more involved. There will be all sorts of different activities sponsored by credit unions such as fundraisers, contests, picnics, maybe even a few parades.

Spirit Day - Also celebrated on the third Thursday in October, this day is a day to support LGBT youth and take a stand against bullying. And let me be clear. Supporting them does not mean that you agree with their lifestyle, as I know that many out there do not.  It does mean that you believe that whatever their lifestyle is, they should be able to live free from being bullied. We all have choices to make in this life that we have been given. We can choose to be a person who builds people up and is supportive of those around you, or we can choose to be a person who pushes people down and makes those around you miserable. I choose to be the former.

Get Smart About Credit Day – This is a day for bankers to reach out to their communities by going to the high schools and colleges and teaching the kids about budgeting, using credit cards wisely and building a good credit history. This is always celebrated on a weekday in October but is not on a regular schedule like most days so we have to wait until it is announced every year. Bankers are encouraged to host events to celebrate this day anytime in the fall so you may see some things going on at your local bank on other days.
