Kick Butts Day – Some of my karate friends are going to see this and say, “YES!” But read on my friends because we are talking about a different kind of 'butt'. Today is a day for fighting against the Tobacco industry, encouraging kids to not pick up the tobacco habit, and raising awareness about the health concerns related to tobacco. There are more than a thousand events of different kinds with this goal in mind scheduled around the world today. We celebrate this day on the third Wednesday of March.
International Day of Forests - This is a day to draw attention to the dangerous levels of deforestation. This accounts for 12 - 20% of the global greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. We depend upon all of our forests and the wide variety of trees that exist outside of forested areas for animal habitation, oxygen to carbon dioxide balance, and protection against erosion and landslides. The theme for 2018 is “Forests and Sustainable Cities.”
National California Strawberry Day - California produces probably 80-90% of the strawberries you find in American grocery stores year round. I like them, but I don’t have a refined palate like some of my friends who find them to be flavorless. They are also in the midst of some controversy over how much pesticides they use on the berries that we then end up eating. So perhaps, as is the case in all things, moderation is the key.
National Flower Day - This is a day to celebrate the flowers. We use flowers for all kinds of purposes from expressing condolences to expressing love. Many of us have a favorite kind of flower or a favorite color. I like all flowers and all colors….as long as someone else takes care of them because I have a way of killing plants and flowers, no matter how hard I try to do otherwise.
National Teenager Day - We hear a lot about teenagers who cause trouble. Whether it’s talked about on the news or at the corner grocery store. What we don’t talk much about, and should, are the teenagers who are amazing. We need to hear about the teens who volunteer to help a local charity, or the ones who are inventing a way to make life better for someone, or who are getting great grades and filling leadership roles in the community. These teens are out there and we need to celebrate them today.
World Puppetry Day - Suggested by Puppet Artist Javad Zolfaghari from Iran, and agreed to by the Congress of the Union Internationale de la Marionnette, this is a day to celebrate the amazing talents of puppeteers and the enjoyment we all get from watching them work their magic. It was first celebrated in 2003.
Fragrance Day – Today is a day to celebrate smells. All the things in this world that smell good. Of course, different people have different definitions of good smells. Do you smell good today? Maybe you're wearing some flowers or perfume? Maybe you need to?
International Day For The Elimination Of Racial Discrimination – Created by the United Nations General Assembly in 1979, this is a day to do something to promote diversity. How boring would life be if we were all the same? Celebrate differences instead of condemning them. This day was chosen because it was on this day in 1960 that police in South Africa shot and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid laws requiring the black population to carry a “pass” at all times.
Memory Day – I think we all have days when our memory is not so good. So today, do something to try to improve your memory. Memory or brain games are a good option. If you can't remember to do that, try walking down memory lane with yourself and spend some time remembering some of the important events in your life.
World Poetry Day – Created by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization in 1999, this is a day to appreciate poetry of all kinds and to give your support to poets all over the world. Even if you’re not a fan of poetry, you have to appreciate the ability some people have to convey an idea or impression by choosing just the right words in just the right order.
World Down Syndrome Day – Created twelve years ago, this is a day to celebrate the amazing abilities of people with down syndrome. Having a disability only means that you have to work a little harder to achieve what you want to achieve. It does not mean that it is impossible. This day has been officially recognized by the United Nations for the last five years.
National Day Of Action On Syringe Exchange – This is a call to action. Many people are working hard to try to get Congress to reinstate their program of exchanging money for syringes. Apparently it's an attempt to get people to turn their syringes in to the government instead of using them for drugs. I am somewhat skeptical because I think addicts would just use the money to buy more syringes.
National French Bread Day – Who does not love baguettes? Fresh from the oven, it's a little piece of heaven to a bread lover. Just the thought is making my mouth water and making me want to make some for my family to enjoy.
Single Parent's Day – Being a single parent is a challenge I don't like to contemplate. It's hard enough to be a parent when you have a partner to help you. Today is a day to honor the single parents you know for the very hard work they do. Sometimes if one spouse is away for long periods of time, such as those in the military, the spouse who stays behind is just like a single parent, so we honor you today as well. This day was begun by Janice Moglen in 1984.
National Common Courtesy Day – Common courtesy is hard to find these days. Work on teaching your children about this subject today. Please and thank you and holding doors for people goes a long way toward making everyone's day more enjoyable.
Spring Fairy Fun Day – This is a day that is all about spring and fairies. Some of us have had a rough winter this year so we are ready to celebrate anything to do with spring. A great way to celebrate would be to make some fairy crafts with the kids.
