International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation – The United Nations sponsors this day to make the world aware of the fact that female genital mutilation happens in many countries of this world and we need to do whatever we can to make it stop. The first step is to get into those areas where it happens and educate parents who believe it's the right thing to do to their daughters. I can’t comprehend the mentality that allows them to hurt their children like this, but tradition is a very strong force to overcome. Even when that tradition is just plain wrong.
Working Naked Day – Begun in 2010, I must stress that this day is for those of us fortunate enough to WORK FROM HOME today! Please, I beg you, do not celebrate this day if you work outside the house today, or even if you work inside your home with other people today. You might also want to reconsider doing this if you do a lot of video chatting or skyping. I’m not too sure what the point of the day is and I couldn’t find out who created it. I can only surmise that it must be someone who is comfortable in their own skin and not shy AT ALL.
Lame Duck Day – Elected officials who are nearing the end of their terms are considered lame ducks. This is a day to reflect upon the contributions of these ducks, I mean people, to society at large before they go off to obscurity. If you don't like the official leaving office, give them a break today. After all, they will be out of office very shortly.
Bubble Gum Day – As far as my children are concerned, every day should be bubble gum day. However, today is actually all about using bubble gum as a fun fundraiser. The basic idea is that children who pay 50 cents or more are allowed to chew gum at school or at a library or some other business. The money goes to whatever non-profit association the business/school/library has chosen to give it to.
Wear Red Day – This is a day to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of women and many times can be prevented if you know the signs. But educate yourselves because the signs of heart disease in women and men are different.
Give Kids A Smile Day – Dental organizations all over the country have designated this to be a day to focus on teeth. Many dentists will give free examinations to kids today so call up your dentist to see if he/she is participating. This day is celebrated on the first Friday in February.
