Encourage a Young Writer Day - Today we should encourage the children in our lives to become great writers. You can do that by listening to their stories and encouraging them to write them down. Help them learn how to write poetry, suggest they start a diary, journal or blog. Ask them about what they have written. Ask them questions about their characters to help them develop their stories with more details.
Golfer's Day – Golfer’s are a little bit obsessive about their sport. They will take any opportunity to get out there and chase that little ball around. Well, rain or shine (or even snow, although in that event I recommend using brightly colored golf balls), today is the day for all of us to get out there and golf. Some celebrate this day on April 14th but since all golfers will tell you that every day is golfer’s day, I don’t think they will mind celebrating twice.
National Siblings Day – This is a day to celebrate your brothers and sisters. As I often tell my children, friends of all kinds may come and go but siblings are a part of your life forever. You will fight now and then, especially when you are young, but hopefully you can patch things up and maintain a lifelong, loving relationship with those who have known you the longest and have a shared history. Make sure your siblings know how much you love them.
ASPCA Day – On this day in 1866, after an impassioned plea from Henry Bergh to the New York State Legislature, the ASPCA was formed. It was the first humane organization ever created in the Western Hemisphere. Their mission was to “provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.” It continues to this day and rescues all types of animals and does everything it can to find forever homes for them with people who will love them and care for them the way they should be taken care of.
National Farm Animals Day – Founded by Colleen Paige, this is a day to recognize the problems of slaughter animals (which is not simply the fact that they are slaughtered but also their living conditions prior to that sad end), and to find homes for abandoned and abused farm animals.
Salvation Army Founder’s Day – On this day in 1829, William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army, was born. His mission to help people around the world grew beyond his wildest dreams and continues to this day.
National Cinnamon Crescent Day – Crescent rolls are good, cinnamon crescent rolls are mouth watering. With the added benefit that your house will smell heavenly if you bake them yourself. I’m on the lookout for a good gluten free version. There are a few recipes online that I haven’t tried yet, but I’d prefer a good recommendation from someone who has made some that turned out well.
Safety Pin Day – On this day in 1849, William Hunt was granted a patent for his invention of the safety pin which he later sold for $400. He invented the safety pin to settle a $15 debt to a friend so he got $385 out of the deal. The company that bought it was W.R. Grace and Company which has made millions of dollars in profit from Hunt's invention over the years. I, for one, am grateful to Mr. Hunt because I am just not good with straight pins. I am far too clumsy.
Global Day To End Child Sexual Abuse - This is a day that is celebrated all over the world on the second Sunday in April. There will be events in many countries to bring to light the issue of child sexual abuse, which is all too often swept under a rug and ignored. If you know of someone who is being abused, speak up. If you are being abused, you have the power to stop it by telling a trusted adult.
