Today we celebrate:

National Love Your Red Hair Day - Stephanie and Adrienne, the co-founders of How To Be A Redhead, began this day in response to the negative to redhead holidays such as Kick a Ginger Day. Perhaps they hadn’t heard of Kiss a Ginger Day yet. But in any case, they wanted to spread a positive message for the redheads out there, of which my son is one. So if you have red hair, this is a day to look at yourself with new eyes and see all the many things there are to love about your hair. One I can name right off is that I am jealous of you because I have always wanted red hair. I love how it looks and was so happy when my son was born with it.

American Football Day - On this day in 1959, Lamar Hunt created the American Football League. He loved all kinds of sports and had tried for a long time to get a National Football League franchise and bring a football team to Texas. He was unsuccessful at doing that so he decided to create a whole new League instead. I’d say that worked out pretty well for him.

Bank Transfer Day - This is a day that was started by Kristen Christian in 2011 who was frustrated with the “ridiculous fees and poor customer service” of banks. So she began encouraging friends and family to close their bank accounts and move their money to a credit union. She chose this day for this event because of its affiliation with Guy Fawkes whom you will read about in a moment.

National Doughnut Appreciation Day - There are a couple of doughnut (or donut, whichever you prefer, both spellings are acceptable in this country) days to celebrate during the year. This one is not just about eating them, but about enjoying them. You are to savor each bite today and really appreciate the flavors that you are ingesting along with the calories.

Gunpowder Day, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night or Fireworks Night – Celebrated mostly in Great Britain, this is a day that remembers the events that occurred on this day in 1605. Way back then, Guy Fawkes, who was a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while he was guarding the explosives that members of his group set up under the House of Lords. They were attempting to blow up all of the members of the House of Lords and bring Catholic rule back to the United Kingdom. The whole city of London celebrated the fact that King James I survived the assassination attempt and they lit bonfires all over the city.

Commercial TV Broadcast Day - On this day in 1930 the first commercial was broadcast on television. It was a commercial for the Eugene Method of permanent hair waving and it was shown during the transmission of Hairdressing Fair of Fashion. I wonder if anyone watched it. Not too many people had televisions back then as they had just been invented a short time before this.

The End of Daylight Savings Time - On this day we are to turn our clocks back an hour to officially end Daylight Savings Time for those states that participate in this program. It means that the sun will rise an hour earlier and will set an hour earlier. I don’t mind the morning sun, but I really don’t like when it get dark so early in the day.

Zero Tasking Day – This is the day that marks the end of Daylight Savings Time. So we turn our clocks back an hour and gain an extra hour of time. Your job today is to not fill that hour with more stressful work. Use it to decompress, re-energize yourself or maybe even get an extra hour of sleep.
