Today we celebrate:

Bike To School Day - We already had one of these because of the discrepancy in when different people choose to honor it. This is the 2nd Wednesday in May group and they want to encourage children to bicycle or walk to school today. Naturally, take their age and the safety of the surrounding streets into consideration and/or have a parent or guardian go with them.

Buddha Day – Known as Vesakha, or Buddha's birthday, the date of celebration varies depending on which culture's calendar you follow. The Chinese lunar calendar places the day on the 8th day of the 4th month, which would be May 10th this year. The Japanese adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1873 and so they celebrate this day on April 8th every year. Other countries celebrate on various other days. On this day Buddhists are expected to gather at their temples for a day full of symbolism and reflection upon Buddha's words.

Trust Your Intuition Day - We all have a feeling that we tend to call intuition or instinct. It’s a feeling that comes over us that tells us that something is good or bad. We frequently ignore this intuition and don’t trust that it is valid. But that is usually not a good idea. Many times our intuition could save us from bad things if we only listen to it. We don’t know why we have it, and sometimes it’s hard to tell if it’s our intuition, or if we are just overreacting to something, which makes it hard to know what to do when we feel that way. But today is a day to practice trusting your intuition. The more you do, the more you will be able to.

National Shrimp Day - Shrimp is a popular shellfish in my household. All of my kids love them, even the ones who don’t really care for fish in general.

National Small Business Day - Small businesses are the life blood of the thousands of communities that make up our great country. While big business is trying so hard to wipe out the competition that they represent, we cannot allow that to happen. Small businesses employ local people, pay local taxes, and money spent in small businesses will stay in your local community. Small businesses also can offer more options than big businesses because the owner is usually right on hand to make decisions to offer a different service, negotiate something, or solve a problem. With a big business, all too often you hear that they can’t do that.

Clean Up Your Room Day – This just might be my favorite day so far. Kids! Where are you? Have I got a day for you! Get the winter doldrums out of your room and get it ready for summer!

World Lupus Day – Lupus is an autoimmune disease that can affect any organ in the body. It is a disease for which there is, so far, no cure. Today is about spreading awareness of the disease so people can be diagnosed earlier, and raising funds for research so better treatments can be developed. Learn more about it today.

Occupational Safety & Health Professionals Day – Celebrated on the Wednesday of North American Occupational Safety and Health Week (which would be this week) since 2006, this is a day to recognize the commitment of occupational safety, health, and environmental professionals to protect people, their property and the environment. These are the people who work hard to identify and remove workplace hazards in all organizations.

National Receptionist Day – Created by the National Receptionists Association and celebrated on the 2nd Wednesday in May, this is a day to celebrate the receptionists that work in almost every company in America. When a customer walks in the door if the receptionist doesn't make a good impression on behalf of the company, many times that customer will walk back out again. They work hard to maintain the image of their company and to promote that company's capabilities.

National Night Shift Workers Day – Another day celebrated on the second Wednesday in May. This is a day to honor those brave individuals who work at night and sleep during the day in order to keep the companies they work for operating 24 hours a day. I did it for one week when I was much younger and I thank God that I didn't have to do it any longer because I was exhausted. That is a danger that people who live this lifestyle face, perpetual exhaustion which can make doing everything much more dangerous. You find night shift workers in many organizations. The ones that comes to mind immediately are hospitals, police departments, paramedics and other health related industries although those are not, by any stretch of the imagination, all that there are.

Donate A Day's Wages To Charity – The second Wednesday in May is also a day to support charities. Consider donating a full day's wages to your favorite charity. There is an organization called One Day’s Wages that is working to ease the extreme poverty that 1.4 billion people live with. If you donate through them, they say that 100 percent of your donation will go toward the cause. I encourage you to investigate whoever you decide to support so you can avoid falling victim to a scam.

National Root Canal Appreciation Day - Created by Dr. Chris Kammer, a dentist, this is a day to appreciate the relief that a root canal can give you. Root canals have a bad rap, mostly because no one ever wants one. They hurt for a several days afterward. But they are absolutely necessary if you are in pain because the roots of your teeth have problems. So don’t be afraid to get one, a little pain now will free you from long term pain in the future. This day is celebrated on the second Wednesday of May.

School Nurse Day – Celebrated on the Wednesday within National Nurses Week which is always from May 6th through May 12th. School nurses take care of our children's bumps, bruises, cuts, scrapes and illnesses every day. They are vital to the health and wellness of our children in public and private schools. Today is a day to let them know how much we appreciate them.
